it's not even worth trying to keep track all the sub genres any more haha.  some times, two diff terms are used for the same genre.  so I don't even bother.

LCD soundsystem is described as indie rock, dance punk, and electronic.  I have no idea what any of that means.  I just know I like it.  The fact that the same band can be described as rock and dance boggles my mind.

I don't even bother trying to keep track.  I just focus on artists.  It's not like the days of classic rock, heavy metal, new wave, pop, folk, r&b, country, classical, opera, punk.  I believe that about covered the entire gamut of music at one point in time.

I think you've described more than required genres.  The number of genres have remained almost the same since the 80's plus a handful of new ones.  The rest are just endless names trying to define every different way one musician/band and all the "me too" clones try to play that genre

Seriously, if you think metal/rock/dance has to many sub-genres, stay away from Jazz & Classical.....you don't know meaningless sub-genres until you've tried to figure out "post-bop avant-garde"    And that doesn't begin to cover classical (which is the most grossly misapplied label ever invented....most of what folks call "classical" isn't even that....wrong time period.)

People love to label and file and categorize and subcategorize everything until everything has its own unique label.  Then they'll sub-reference that by era.  I think it's a human mass-OCD that's built into our animal instinct...we were all born to be librarians just waiting to burst out.  Classical gives us the better part of a millennium to try to categorize....ouch.

Hello there

Went to a headphone meet a few weeks ago and got a chance to listen to the HD 650 and I really liked what I heard. So have decided to order a pair, looking forward to there arrival.

At the moment my system is a pc running Jriver software, playing Flac, converted from CD or some 24 bit flac from B&W society of sound, sent to a Lindemann USB-DAC 24/192, to a White Bird Amplification- Virtus-01, then to a pair off Sennheishers RS 180 wirless headphones. The HD 650's will be replacing the RS 180's.

I find that they can, but it certainly depends on the amp.  IMO, the best match will improve the experience at all volume levels.

Honestly, I thought that the e09+odac was pretty darn good and it is. But this is a completely different experience. This is a phenomena I've experienced a couple of times in the regular stereo world.  When I added the Modwright SWL9.0se preamp to my stereo chain, I got a fuller sound, a little more clarity, and while there were improvements at all volume levels, the music was also more tolerable at high SPLs.  I also noticed it in a big way when I listened to a complete MBL system.  We were listening at insane levels and it wasn't at all uncomfortable or fatiguing.

To me the amp is like having a solid foundation under a house. Even at low volumes it is simply more solid.

Hello,

You should enjoy your HD650 with the stock cable for now.  

Afterwards, as you login more hours you can try experimenting with cables.  Having said that, I like the stock cable, but I tried pure Silver, Silver plated copper, solid copper(not good as it is not flexible), stranded copper, and Litz config copper.  I settled with Litz wired Copper (remnant wires from my tonearm re-wire long time ago).  Here's a pic.  Excluding the wire which I forgot who gave it to me many summers ago in an Audio Show, it cost me around $50 to build the cable below.  The + has 3x 26ga per channel and the negative(-) have 6x2 6 ga. wires as they are shared between L&R.  The cable is shielded at the amp terminal only, floating at the HP pins connector. Total length from pins to headphone jack tip is ~ 10 feet.

I thought classical was anything that had a violin?  So you are saying John Williams Superman Theme isn't classical?  I'm SHOCKED!!!

actually I was having a music conversation the other day, and someone said that they listened to classical.  And I was like, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven? (trying to name the obvious ones).  And he was like who? No, I listen to them songs to "insert tvshow/movie here".  I guess I tuned out the rest of the conversation. haha.

I think classical is the easiest to cateogorize.  Anything prior to Gershwin(inclusive of Gershwin) I would consider classical.  That includes the Baroque, and all the sub-genres.  And I played classical piano growing up.  Just easier to label my music this way.  Guess I'm just lazy.

Hey guys, just got some HD600s today from a member, barely used for $300. I could've gotten the HD650s for $375 but I wasn't sure I'd like them, since I love my sparkly/"neutral"/detailed DT880s. I wanted a pair of headphones to complement them with a warmer, darker sound but still enough detail to be pleased when listening to stuff like Infected Mushroom, or anything fast, really. I just heard Bon Iver on the HD600s (ODAC+E17) and it was incredible. Makes me wonder what it would be like with the HD650s. Do you think it would be worth my time to try to sell the HD600s and just get the HD650s? I have a Lyr arriving tomorrow. Might get the Bifrost after returning my HE400s as well. Then I'll have an E17/ODAC for my bedside rig... lol

What do I do? I want to spend some time with the HD600s and the Lyr for sure, but I know I'll just keep wondering what the HD650s are like. Are they a bit darker than the HD600s? Anyone with experience with both?

Laid back/darker yes. The guy who designed them just today said he uses the 650 more than the 600, that should seriously say something. But if you are dead set on neutral cans, stay away.

I have a similar set up to you.  I have DT990 as my "sparkly" headphones and my HD650 for my warmer headphones.  Beyers and Senns are good compliments imho.  V-sig complimented by a mid-range hump.  Covers pretty much all my listening needs.

Are these better than the HD 600? sorry new here.
