The 650 is nothing like the 880.  They are almost opposites.

Hey E. I already had the 800s. I'm assuming you meant the HE500 and T1?

I got the HE500 yes...planning to get the T1 soon.

So I pulled the trigger on a hd650 on ebay for 330 :) plus 25 shipping :I plus 10 brokerage fee when ups delivers it :(... still considerably cheaper than buying it in canada though.

That's how I got mine a couple of months ago.  Pretty much the same price. HD650 prices in Canada are pretty ridiculous.

I'm sure you'll enjoy them.

It's good to see people still buying the 650's, they are still one of the best phones out there. Without a doubt the best in their price range. It seems that all of the abuse they had from the Orthos mob is now showing signs of alleviating as more hifi experts are giving more objective experiences. I think it will still be a long time before the 650's can be beat without paying double/treble the price.

Bought these cans a year ago and I am absolutely loving them.

I also have the ATH-W1000 but haven't used them since.

I bought my 650's off here from lazerboy for $450 including the DHC Molecule cable. The cans themselves were practically brand new. The HD650 was on my short list to audition along with the LCD-2. My notes indicated that the HD650 was the best value and the LCD-2 at $1250 was the best overall. I listened to both with aftermarket cables which gives you the capability to fine-tune the sound signature. Or in the case of the HD650 to fairly significantly transform the SS. It was a lot easier for me to justify the HD650 and I expect I will be enjoying them for quite a while longer.

I will be ordering some hd650s this weekend. What is the best cable upgrade that doesn't "neautralize" the hd650s sound? I'm looking for something that keeps the laid back presentation of the hd650s that I've heard so much about yet brings in that extra clarity that the stock cable lacks.

So far I've read that the cardas, ZU, and Silver Dragon all extend the treble significantly which is something I'd like to avoid. A moderate amount of extension is fine but I don't want these to turn neutral on me.

My budget for the cable is roughly $300.

You could just make one yourself and save some money. I've gotten good results with the Mogami Starquad. It cost me under $40 after buying the Cardas connectors. If you want something that might be better, I've read that Double Helix Cable is a good match. I believe it's about $60-$80 just for the the wire depending on the length. Making an HD-650 cable isn't too difficult really, even for someone like me that has only average soldering skills.

I've only soldered once and I don't even have an iron atm, I'd much rather just buy a cable with the connectors already in place. Btw if it helps I'll be using my e7/e9 for this until I save up again and can afford an mkIII

I say stick to copper for the HD650s. Jena labs cryo cable (18g or 22g) is one of the best for sound, but it's a bit thick and heavy (and expensive). DHC Molecule is light, flexible and sounds almost as good. Blue Dragon V3 is a nice cheap option, though sounds a bit worse than the other two. If you want something in between copper and silver, get the APS V3. It increases speed and imaging more than the copper recables, but keeps the laid back sound. However, it's not as liquid or forgiving as pure copper.
 

I got a really good deal on a 5ft headphile blacksilver cable which I've read does pretty much what i want with a bearable treble extension. I would like to stay away from copper here because I want to keep the bass as tight and away from the midrange as possible.
