Q701 handled it magnificently, as did the HD598, both turned up as loud as I could listen. Amp is Schiit Magni.

Decware does a live broadcast every year for their Zenfest. Steve has it mic'd with top stereo mic's. Watching the live feed I kept turning around as the soundstage behind me made it seem like someone was entering the room from the rear....Cool effect. the 650's really showed well.

I definitely get a far rear sound effect from time to time, and not one that's spaced incrementally rearward from the main sound image, but like way back there, as if in a rear channel home theater. It's very fleeting and intermittent, so I fall for it every time, thinking something is behind me. I face a wall and window at my desk, which magnifies the startling effect.

Although my system isn't balanced like yours, I understand your point completely as I primarily bought my Lyr to drive my HE500. 

However, the Lyr is now always connected to the HD650, while the HE500 is always driven by a vintage Marantz 2226B.

Overkill be damned, I couldn't be any happier.

What do you mean "burp"? My HD600 and HT880 do fine with that song, although the sub-bass they produce doesn't come anywhere near what my Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speaker system does thanks to its sub-woofer. ;)

What i mean by "burp" is, for example when you feed a subwoofer a powerful amp, the sub takes quite a strain and makes a "burp" sound( my guess its the cone that cant extend any further) and if you keep it up long enough; you'll ruin them.

Now the Sennheisers do alright at low to medium listening levels, no "burp", soon as i reach high levels, thats when they start to fail, the HD650 seems to need more ampage to start causing it to burp though.

What are you amping them with?

Do you get this effect with the HD-800 a lot too? The only headphone that gives me this a lot is my K400. It has an even larger soundstage than my Q701 and AD700.

I wonder if the k400 is known to be capable of having a soundstage as large as that of the HD-800. Highly unlikely.

I'll have to buy a few HD-800s and Schiit Mjolnirs and test this out. I also wonder what an HD-598 is capable of considering it's soundstage is generally larger than the HD-650 (but not as good and less accurate).

My problem with the 598 is that it often makes some things seem TOO distant. With the K400 it's never like this..

^^ The hd598 was not for me. Soundstage doesn't mean much to me. The hd650 does too many things very well IMO.

The mids of the 598 are just plain addicting. They sound much more forward than those of the 650 and almost too much so..

The 598 is more grainy than the 600 and 650, but most people won't notice unless it's with specific music.

I've gotten the HD-650 to sound every bit as fun to listen to as the HD-598 though. Not boring at all.

It's funny how I always preferred the 598 over my last two 650s and the HD-600, yet this newer pair is better than every other Sennheiser I had.

My 2nd favorite though is the HD-580 with STOCK grills. The sound is a little worse with HD-600 grills.

After listening to this HD-650 it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to go back to my HD-598 and HD-580. The HD-600 just annoys me.

It actually has more bass than my HD-650. I mean it's more forward and bloated. A little less controlled with the same amping.

This 650 has better low bass, but not a huge difference.

Not sure why the soundstage of the 650 is so much better than the rest..oh and the ODAC LOVES the HD-650.

I don't want to be a jerk, but after catching up on the last 4-5 pages of this thread there was one thing I couldn't let slide.  That is the gratuitous use of the word "retarded."  It is an offensive word used in the context of several previous posts.  I imagine it was not any one's intention to offend...  Thanks y'all!

P.S.  still love my HD 650!

I think it's perfectly in the context of using it to describe O2 trolls.
