the EX71's were good in that they showed me how good headphones can sound, I only experienced stock buds before that. they led me to find this website and spend tons more on all sorts of audio equipment. also the ex71's were very comfortable.

otherwise they are not that great sounding, they're cheaply made, and the wiring is very cheap. but to each his own. i'm glad you feel your ex71s are so much better.
Must not have been quite the same exact mod as I have 2 professional full size headphones & super-fi 3's & 5's as well as the creative labs aurvana's & the modded EX71's wipes the floor with any of these for bass extension, balance & openness of the mids & top end without undue edginess. Not to mention sounstage which these top everything I've heard so far without artificial enhancement. Everyone that has actually heard them loves them & i've had several people here the ones i did personally.

Just did that, thank You for the tip. I put in couple of raisers that lifted the EX71's tube up a bit. Keep in mind thought that I haven't cut of the original tube of the Sparkplugs, just extended it with Sony's tube.

So it's like half of the tubing system (didn't find a better word, sorry) is the original narrow tube and the other half is EX71's wider tube. I liked to keep the mods easy and reversible and that's why I didn't cut the original tube off.

Thank You for all Your help germanium and sorry for hijacking your thread.

You didn't hijack as I first mentioned the koss "the plug" possable modification first. It's near the top of page 2.

I've never had a problem with the wiring on mine & I abuse them a fair amount & mine are the ones with the thin spongy feeling cables. The cables on these are much better than the thicker cables found on the Shure E2c's. I had nothing but troubles with the E2c's cables & stopped buying them as a result.

I don't just remove the wax paper cap on these. That would result in boosted high frequencies to the point of being agressive

I'm skeptical about the soundstage...the drivers, even if they are as amazing as you say they are are still far too small.

Don't need big driver if you have a reasonably tight coupling to the eardrum. Most balanced armature style IEM's drivers are even smaller yet everyone seems to like them. Not me so far thoygh haven't heard the Etymotics yet.

Those balenced armature drivers are still lacking in soundstage compared to larger drivers, in addition the ex71 sits farther away from the eardrum than the average IEM.

The drivers are actually closer to the eardrum than most balanced armature types if you realize that the drivers are not turned at an angle to the ear like most balanced armatures. Virtually all balanced armatures also go though a filter before exiting to the output tube which puts them even further away from the eardrum.

doing a set for a co-worker this weekend. He heard them both stock & modified & was very very impressed at the difference.

Found that the newer Koss The Plug inserts to the foam plugs are larger diameter so it no longer works for this mod but this mod works on the JVC HA-FX55ZB as well as they use a very similar driver (may even be the exact driver just speced different by JVC). They appear to be more cheaply made though & their bass is about the same as the EX 51's. The rubber case covering is not glued so it can come off exposing the cheap inner casing to the JVC's. This appears to be a common driver to most of the 9mm driver headphones.

Here is a picture of the modified EX71's

In modded form they are incredable sounding but the tubes that I was getteing from the Koss spark plugs have been changed by Koss so they no longer work but if you can get the old style with the grey cord instead of the newer white cord those should work

I'm curious to know how this mod increases soundstage. Is it the tips or the tubes?
