My DAC's to date would be;

The first Audio Alchemy. I think it was $400.

A Muse 296 paid around $1400.(stolen) Best sounding DAC I've ever heard!

A MSB DAC Link3 : $400. Still in home system.

A MF X-DacV3 : not sure what I paid, maybe $500. Sounded good but lacked body.

A Entech 203.2 for a short time. Sounds so good for the money, I uped it to a 245.2 within a couple of months. Still using in headphone setup.

According to MSB Technology's online store, the MSB Link DAC III costs $499.

There's a couple on Audiogon right now selling for $150. I paid $250 a month ago. Great DAC for the money... a very cheap way to improve any digital source.

The optical out on the MacBook Pro is the same jack as the headphone out. IF you use a toslink cable with a mini jack on one end (or buy a regular toslink to mini toslink converter at the apple store, or many audio supply sources) then the macbook outputs optical digital instead of analog audio. You can use the Audio MIDI set up application (in the utilities folder) to do some extra adjustments.

I notice a difference going through a DAC with almost any decent phones. I run from that out into a Max DAC on a Maxxed out Headroom Home Amp with spectacular results.

I can also vouch for Benchmark DAC1, Bel Canto DAC 3, and even the little Headroom Micro DAC to almost anything including a Raptor, or STAX 727.

My guess is that the better the amp and phones, the more you will be able to notice the difference.
