I also recently found and purchased a MisterX LM6172 PINT. I consider it the best portable amp I've yet heard, and without naming names I've listened to some expensive very well liked portables.

i agree about the AD8397 PINT providing the "wow" factor...i did not like the LM6172 version. it was a bit warmer, but at the expense of the tight slam that the AD8397 provides.

the downside to the AD8397 is that it's an energy-hog. mine is powered by one 9V and i get around 5 hours.

Definitely, the 8397 was such an improvement for me.

Thirded. Speaking of the AD45048 in particular.

The LM6172 didn't even sound "warm" to me: warm in balance yes (actually a bit too much so), warm/rich in tonality not exactly.

WOW


I managed to give a short listen to the last mod. The AD8055 has brought the amp to a new level of musicality. This is the most natural (not because it's warm, just because it's natural ) 'sounding' ground op-amp that I've heard in this amp, that is, better than LMH6654, AD9631, THS4051, LM6171, OPA551.

The vocals, as well as the details (in guitar plucks, cymbals & such) in Jayhawks, Rainy Day Music were gorgeous. The AD8055 has given a better 'attack' to those sounds, and contemporarily the vocals have become sweeter, less edgy, and possibly fuller. It also has enhanced the "black background" thing.

I'm anxious to have my new "Faith Amp" in my hands to see what the winner is

I truely feel that I'm at the top of the heap amp wise, no matter that I got there much cheaper. I'd also like to set up a blind challenge against the "big boy" portables, I think that may be very interesting indeed.

That's the deal with portable amps these days. You don't necessarily have to spend hundreds of $$$ to get a top-level amp. There are quite a few great priceworthy amps out there, and a few more will come shortly...

My $50 DIY portable amps are better than my $350 portable amp, IMO of course.

After reading this thread, talking with swt61 (one of the nicest guys on this forum) and MisterX, I've decided to part ways with my Little Dot Micro+ and go with MisterX's XP Amp (replacement for the Pint) for my portable and an HPdac (very simular to the PINT/AlienDAC Combo - but all in one) for my work desktop solution.
