As mentioned, Larry is www.headphile.com.

recable: change cables

Y configuration: one cable splits into two, and both enter the headphone, one on each side

single-sided: the cable only enters the headphone on one side; this can be more convenient than a Y config, but preferences vary

splice and re-terminate: cut the cable and attach a plug

neutrix TRS: Neutrix is a brand, TRS is a type of plug, the standard 1/4" (6.3mm) plug used by most headphones

mogami and canare star quad: types of popular cables

I hope the above is correct.

These are so cheap I'm embarrassed to suggest them

I wince at solutions costing $10 for a $.0001 hunk of plastic so I use these. I bought Scunci hair clips at Walgreens for $3.50 for 12 and I couldn't be happier. They consist of spring hinged, curved interlocking forks that are designed to coral flowing locks and earphone cables. They come in many sizes so they should work with almost any cable. I have one of those impressively large and bulky cable winders that comes with Sennheiser phones and that's precisely its problem.

1. No info I could find on getting good cable-end mini-jacks. High-quality mini-plugs are everywhere. Would you like nickel, or nickel-and-gold, or black-and-gold, or black-and-nickel? But what about the corresponding cable-end mini-jacks?

2. No info I could find about whether it matters how I wire the matching mini-plug and mini-jack as long as the wires match-up on each side.

Rise!

The simplest and cheapest solution is to neatly bundle a portion of the cable, wrap some cable around it to secure it, then slide the plug through the top loops of cord. That secures the neat little bundle and does not add any weight. If it is done neatly and carefully it looks pretty good. Sort of like we use to do with docksider leather laces as kids or those braided keychains you make at camp.

You could even carefully wrap some electrical tape around the bundle to make it look smoother and thinner, instead of using the cord itself.
