Best way to shorten Sennheiser HD595 Headphones wire

Hey all,
I just got hd595's and while I will use them at home, I imagine I'll be in many situations where the wire is simply too long. Advice on how to shorten the cable, whether by buying another cable or by using some sort of wire-wrapping device?

Thanks...all info appreciated.

call Larry and have him recable it to your desired length. You could also inquire about a Y configuration... or just leave it single sided.

Or you could go the DIY route... splice and re-terminate with a neutrix TRS connector. For ~$5 more, just recable/reterminate yourself with mogami or canare star quad.

hmmm...

yeah i'm not quite sure what that means either. and who's larry?

does recabling risk a loss in quality?

Re-cabling is a nice option if you can afford it or have the technical expertise but using a wire wrap is simpler. Here's an example of one:http://www.sumajin.com/online-Smartwraps.html. My old pair of HD437s also came with their own wire wrap too.

I was thinking more along the lines of a custom order... 1-off. As opposed to offering a standard service.

I found one at sennheiser.com...

I found a Wind-up cable clip at sennheiser.com(http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser...es_accessories) which looks sweet, I just can't find it for sale anywhere. Anyone seen this before/have any idea where I could find it?

Thanks..

you can just buy a pair of Senn HD202 and the senn cord wind up clip will come with it. I dont like it though because it is kinda heavy.

This works well for me =))

If its still too long, roll it twice around the cable management thing.

cable turtle?

recabling the 595's right side is the biggest pain in the arse in the headphone world. there is no hole there for the "aftermarket cable" to go into like akg has (older akgs anyways...) so you HAVE to take the WHOLE headband apart and put the new wire through it. its not fun.

its WAY easier to do a 95% recable, and just do upto the left earcup, and let the right signal go through the 8" of stock wire. the audio purity police are coming and knocking at my door now. i will ask them how much it matters when the wires arent even the same length.... this hsould keep them busy fighting amongst themselvs for WEEKS. yea. fighting innane technicalities with innane technicalities.

I've got a few things that I want to shorten the cable on too. Winding the cable up doesn't help, because then I've got a big wad of cable. I want the cable shorter so that the extra cable just isn't there. This is because I like to stick a DAP in my shirt pocket and move around the house, go out on the porch, go to the fridge, etc. As things are, I not only have the DAP in my shirt pocket, I've also got a large tied-up clump of cable crammed in there too. For this purpose, 30" of cable is plenty. But when I'm sitting down, I want to plug 'em into an amp next to my favorite seat. For that, 30" is not quite enough. So, I'm thinking 54" to 60" is a good length for me.

Rather than discard the extra, I want to make a simple cut in the original and install a mini-plug and mini-jack on the cut surfaces. This way, I can reassemble it and regain it's longer length if/when appropriate. I see lots of places to get high-quality mini-plugs. It's the corresponding cable-end mini-jacks that seem harder to find.

Whenever I do this, does it matter which wires I connect to which terminals on the plug and on the jack? Or is it fine to do it any way, just so I match them up correctly on both the jack and the plug? 'Anything else I should know? I've learned lots of good things the hard way, but I'd rather not repeat whatever mistakes you might have made already.

It's funny how we get used to terminology and forget that others can't understand it.
