I just finished that. I love them as narrator's. It was amazing they were there for the entire WoT series too! I hope they make it through the other 8 books planned in this series.

I was sad when the Wheel of Time series was over. There aren't many epics out there like these. I was happy that Sanderson started The Stormlight Archive. Know of anything else along these lines? Kevin J Anderson's Saga of Seven Suns was good, and though not the same type, Jim Butcher's Dresden series is shaping up nicely.

Saga of 7 suns was great. I like the work he has done on the Dune prequels too. I am just starting a new series by David Weber, the Safehold series....The premise looks good.

As a historian, what do you think of the 'Flashman' books?

They are written by George MacDonald Fraser. They follow the fictional exploits of Harry Flashman, who Fraser manages to graft on to real historical exploits like the Charge of the Light Brigade or the Zulu wars. Flashman is cowardly, lecherous and untrustworthy, and the books mix bawdy humour with exciting action and well-researched historical content. Extensively footnoted and appendixed, too.

If you enjoy the first one, there are plenty of volumes to get through! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flashman_Papers

Me too.......first of the series ordered. I should really unsubscribe to this thread. No offense meant,  with Flashman I have 88 books on my Kindle's library page waiting to be read. I also have a couple of paper books, thanks to Longbowbbs, coming to be able to read on the elliptical so I do not drop the Kindle and break it........again LOL

I think you'll enjoy them. Nobody writes a battle scene like Fraser. Amazon do the whole lot as a single Kindle download, and as an ebook, you can zip between the story and the appendices without losing your place.

His other books are a mixed bunch, but his memoir of the Burma campaign 'Quartered safe out here' is superb and the rather more fictionalised 'McAuslan' books, about his travails with the world's worst soldier are laugh-out-loud hilarious.

Just finished Blood Meridian. I highly recommend it.

There is really nothing quite like it.

Just finished Gone Troppo by John O'Grady. Good stuff, but nowhere near as funny or loveable as They're a weird Mob, which he wrote  under the pen name 'Nino Culotta'. Still, his grasp of colloquial Australian dialogue is still a joy.
