The DAC chip and it's power supply still have an effect on the sound. However a LOT of the issues of the actual sound are worked out nicely by the ZapFilter. It has it's own power taht is not shared with any other part of the DAC and it comes straight off the leads of the DAC chip.

And also a nice stable, low jitter clock implementation.

If I had the knowledge and was any good at soldering I wouldn't think twice about getting a Zhaolu and doing this. Sadly I can't . Very nice and exciting to read about though.

Speaking of reproducing the results, where can I get a Zapfilter2 in NA? I remember reading a while back that PartsConnexion had problems getting them in stock, and I would like more than anything to not have to order from EU and pay $300+ plus tax once it gets here.

There wasn't much to shoot against. There was an old Meitner DAC on hand circa 1990 I believe, and a Benchmark DAC1. Luvdunhill had the Meitner, and did run the Zhaolooser into his system. He seemed impressed with the Zhaolooser. The gentleman that brought the Benchmark never A/B'd the two. I thought the Zhaolooser101 handily tromped both of the DAC's there. Saddly there were only 4 Head-Fi members at the meet. I guess a true A/B will have to wait until a future meet.

Regarding the ZAPfilter Mk2, I got this reply from LC Audio:

Hi eVITAERC
Both LClock and ZAPfilter have suffered from production delay. I am expecting new stock within 3 weeks.
Best regards

Hello,

I've just been informed by your authorized retailers that the ZAPfilter Mk2 had been on BO for a few months now, with no sign of production. Has the product been discontinued? If not, when can I expect more production runs of it?

Thanks,
eVITAERC

Lc Audio just replied to my inquiry, thought I woul pass along the latest intel:
Quote:

Because of change to lead free production we have had a big delay in production. Within 14 days they should be ready for shipping.
You can order through our canadian distributor.

So that means 14 more days until LC Audio starts selling them again? Does it also mean that 14 more days until PartsConnexion will start getting in more Zapfilters from LC Audio?

I guess this is overdue.

Understand that I'm biased.

The weakest attribute of the stock Zhaolu D2C IMO was the dynamics. It was a bit like music was being pulled from it instead of pushed. This is one of the greatest improvements over stock. Everything is sharper and clearer like jumping from standard broadcast TV to HDTV. This DAC is on the other side of the universe from planet lackluster now! It's so engaging and snappy. Like it took vitamins. Some of my old recordings seem almost like half mastered albums now, it's that big of a leap. I'm listening to some old pre-disco BeeGees "New York Mining Disaster" and though it doesn't mask the albums flaws, it's so much more listenable now. Fatigue is nonexistent.

The next area of greatest improvement is bass. Impact and weight, it's all there. Before it had a bit of the 400 lb. woman wiggling out of her girdle syndrome. Now it's got that tight, deep quality that the early Velodyne servo controlled subs of the 80's did so well. Not the flabby Cerwin Vega boom boom muddy mess that I can't endure. This is a quality that will indear me to this DAC forever, being a K340 owner.

The biggest surprise was the improvement in soundstage and imaging. I thought the stock unit performed pretty well here. It's cranked up several notches now. My K340's are imaging superstars, and to pair them with a DAC with a similar virtuoso type quality in that respect is nothing short of amazing.

If I could only use one word to describe the Zhaolooser101 it would be effortless. It just takes whatever I throw at it and knocks me on my butt. I swear it's giggling at me saying "you gotta do better than that pilgrim". If I had spent $1,500.00 dollars on this DAC I'd be quite pleased, because I truely feel it's at least 50% better than my old Lavry. At the price of admission, It's an insane bargain!

I could talk all day, but until I give this DAC what it really begs for, A shootout with the town bully, it's just words. I just haven't been givin' that opportunity yet.

It is that good SonicDawg. I can't imagine anyone not being quite impressed with it. In a blind test, with all the preconceived notions out the window, I'm sure it would be like Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson for the first time.
