It absolutely trounces anything I've heard at 3 times the price, and my guess is that it will compete with big buck CDP's. I'll have some actuall comparisons after the Austin meet Oct. 7th. It's far superior to the Lavry DA10 I had recently at $1000.00. Philodox and looser101 said it handily bested the Eastsound CD5, and looser101 said he prefered it over his modded CIA DAC. I listened to a Rega Jupiter a week ago in Shreveport, LA. I believe it retails for $1800.00. I don't have one to do a side by side comparison, but it was just a week ago, and I definately like the Zhaolooser better. The bass is far superior to the Jupiter IMO.
The front plate was made by me, it's Bloodwood and Quilted Maple.

Like this:

PSU is to the left. See my link in previous post for more pics.

So, my picture is correct (From your pictures it seems right, but I just want to make sure)?

What do you do with the power supply? Is it all ready to go or not (The pictures only show it already "installed," so I don't know if you just connect a ribbon cable, or if you have to wire it to the toroid, or if it's already like that, etc.)?

I got it from partsconnexion and it came all connected. Just connect AC to the grey terminal block (far end) and ribbon cable to PSU and Zapfilter 2.

Picture is correct... nice job.

So, all you do is solder those 6 wires from the Zhaolu to the Zapfilter, connect a ribbon cable from the Zapfilter to its power supply board, and mount the Zapfilter, its power supply board, and the toroid to the enclosure? All the other mods that were done were smaller/insignificant things (Disabling LEDs, removing unnecessary RCA jacks, etc.)?

Just out of curiosity, how exactly did this whole thing happen (Do you two personally know each other? Was it a favor?)?

Azure, quit with the questions and come to the Texas meet on the 7th. You'll find out everything you need to know then...

Road trip!

Anyways, I look forward to the impressions next month (D02A vs. Zhaolooser 101 ought to be interesting; the same with an Ori modded Zhaolu, if anyone brings one).

swt61 - You mentioned speakers in your impressions. What are your impressions of the DAC solely with headphones (Particularly the soundstage. I read in the Zhaolu thread that apparently it creates a pretty big soundstage)?

I guess I'll be compiling my portable rig next year; time to start saving up for the Zapfilter

Is there any chance in hell of this being made available for 240VAC? Somehow I'm thinking it's unlikely.

You can get it here: LCAUDIO (EU)
In Australia: Soundlabs

Woo, thanks man! This makes my choice of DAC for later this year probably a helluva lot easier!

Hmm, they suggest the Sony XB930 CD player as an ideal machine to mod in this way... so would it be best to splurge for a Zhalou or just mod my Sony? Buying a zhalou would be useful for my computer, but given my soundcard is probably jittery as hell I'm not sure. Decisions decisions...

I'm thinking some time into the future at this point, but still.

The soundstage with my K340's is nothing short of amazing. Of coarse the K340's are known for having great imaging, but with the Zhaolooser it's incredibly wide and I can place all the instruments on stage. I'm listening to JAI "Heaven" and I can hear the bass guitar slightly forward and to the right of the lead guitar which is right of center, the drums rear center, keyboard is off to the left, and some instrument I can't quite determine (string of some kind) is more forward and left of center. Never before have I heard this kind of imaging on this album. With my Goldring DR150's (now recabled dual entry) it's still very wide and I can still place the instruments, but not quite as well (everything is scooted more to the center a bit). It's the largest soundstage I've yet encoutered with any headphone rig.

Just wondering were you using the CS4398 or the AD1853 chip?

Looking at the Zapfilter page it seems you have to short different places depending on what chip you use..
