eddie current ec-ss

Ill make this is simple and straight forward as I can giving the abstract and personal nature of this hobby. The EC-SS is a solid state headphone amp from eddie current. As best I know this is the first product of its kind in the eddie current saga of headphone amps. Its built in the same chassis as the EC/DC sporting a volume knob on the its front right and standard 1/4" headphone socket on the left. Around back there is a couple of options for inputs one label ac input the other labeled dc, also there is a rca connection for the 18V ac… well here are the specs

16 transistors two AD797 opamps.

Minimum power out 1/2 watt 30-300 ohm phones

Bandwidth DC input DC to 200kHz

AC input 15 to 200 kHz.

AC wall adapter supplies 18V to the circuit. It is rectified with schotky

diodes which feed four low noise buffered shunt regulators. The transistor

output buffers are biased with four gallium arsenide current sources.

All signal resistors are carbon comp.

Not sure if this is nessasary. But I listened to the EC-SS in a couple different places. First was with a my home set up which includes ps audio's ultimate outlet and juice bar connected to a linn mimik cd player from the cd player to the EC-SS is a pair of proto type ted's excellent cable now cable pros reflection interconnects. Headphones used included grado sr80, sr125, sr325i and rs-2 also the sennhieser 280 and hd600 with replacement cable from ted's excellent cable now cable pros earcandy. My work set up consist of a NAD l40 and alex aka zip of apuresound.com interconnects.

The sound. bass, depth and space, speed, texture feel are the characteristic ill attempt to convey. Bass carries weight and punch but never over done nor exaggerated. Its never like a bully, more like a precise hit man, gets down to do his work then out with no trace. Regarding speed or pace of this amp. Has great pace and speed. Never seems to be in the way of its self. Using a cut from outkast latest release morris brown. this particular recording highlights a marching band playing a upbeat groove making use of horns, bass, tom tom drums and all. EC-SS makes each transistion with speed and instrument stand with its own character. You wont find yourself strained to here a specific instrument or rif. This lends to soundstage which is the most expansive I have heard in a solid state rig. Tons of depth texture to each note. The texture is defined more from the decay of a note versus the attack. Now for how all this plays together… amazingly well. EC-SS plays with tons of detail and the ease of the abilty to listen all day.

In a side by side with my eddie current EC-01, EC/DC and grado RA-1 (dc powered). The EC-SS stands tall. I my opninion the EC-SS out does my favorite EC-01 in terms of detail. Also the depth and space of the EC-SS soundstage its just short of my EC-01 but miles north of my grado RA-1.

more to post later. also have pics at home ill try to get them posted tonight.

posting pics is tricky...

thread says i can only upload a 25kb file... my pics are quite a bit larger than that.

@OP:

You can use Imagshack to bypass the forum's picture size limit.

first pic... working on more.

also a BIG foot note about the EC-SS, its very accurate. in listening to better recorded work... depth and detail are returned in buckets. i listened to it all day today at work. my selection included rick james come get it, shapes the big picture and pat metheny group letter from home. i have never heard pat mentheny group so vividly detailed with the cornucopia of instruments and vocals attempting to press the amp. EC-SS made easy work of it. having several of my friends at work give the amp a sample, the EC-SS consistantly recieved impressive praise.

i can safely say this is the best solid state headphone amp i have ever heard.

ps...im attempt to put together a purchase group for eddie current's next amp. the hd series is making a return.

I just emailed Craig to see if I can find out more about the HD series and the EC-SS. No wonder my Zana Deux is not ready, he's too busy with this. Just kidding Craig.

zana deux

craig mentions that about the the delay in the hd series the zana deux come first. fellas here is what i know about the hd30 so far..."On Senn's the HD30 is more like the ZD than the HD25. It is not as seductive in nature as the ZD which instantly transports you into the music, but I think it is more musical than the HD25". and for the grado lovers the hd30 is said to be just as nice. if we can collectively order enough of the these hd30's im just about positive we will get a dynamite deal.

The HD30 is going to be an OTL variant of the HD25 with the same power transformers of the ZD.

Your HD25 is a thing of the past. You might as well just sell it to me.

what! i spent all that $ on the Zana Deux, thinking it was the only way to get performance close to the HD25. now i realize i coulda waited a while and just gotten the HD30

btw: the EC-SS was at the so cal meet, but it broke before i could hear it.... i asked him about it, thinking it was an EC/DC and Craig then explained what it was.

well, the Zana is significantly better than the HD-25, so i don't think you'll be unhappy when you get it

yea, i know, they were side by side at the so cal meet (well, a modded HD25 anyways). i'm just saying that i could have lived happily with the HD25 and not felt the need for the ZD.
