Using a Total Bithead as a DAC

I currently have my bookshelf speakers hooked up to my HTPC for multipurpose use (optimized for music). I have a set of Energy C-3 speakers and a Pioneer Elite A35R amp. I'm running my Total Bithead via USB, and using a stereo mini to RCA adaptor to hook it up to the amp.

Now this is working, and sounds acceptable, but I only did it because it's what I have. I know the Total Bithead is not designed for use as a DAC. What I want to know is just how terrible of a thing this is. Do I have to worry about damaging any of my equipment? Assuming I keep doing it, what relative TBH volume and amp volume should I use?

Perhaps this should be moved to the speakers forum.
