Just realize Craig can customize balanced input for the ZDSE with input transformers (not sure if he can offer this anymore).  Anyone has this customization in their built?  Any thought, improved SQ, better than SE, worth it?

Thanks.

I got email from Craig that he is waiting for the transformer to be completed in early next week. Hope I can get my BA in two weeks. beerchug.gif

Yesterday I tried my ZDSE (at low gain setting) on my newly purchased pair of JH13 Pro CIEM's. In one word: WOW. Not only was I surprised by how good this CIEM sounds, but also how well the ZDSE drives it. I thought a $2-3K tube amp would be overkill for such sensitive CIEM's, but holy mother of god, this sounds like sonic heaven. Although it doesn't have that accurate imaging and spacious soundstage of the HD800, the JH13 Pro/ZDSE sounds almost as good as the TH900/ZDSE combo.

This evening, I spent a about 90 minutes playing around with various combinations of amps and headphones :-

  • Zana Deux
  • (Currawong's) Woo Audio WA7 Fireflies
  • Invicta v1 DAC/Amp
  • Fostex TH-900
  • (Currawong's) LCD3
  • (Musica Acoustic's) Mr.Speakers Mad Dog v3.2

With regards to the amps, the source was the Invicta.

Of the headphones I tried, I found the synergy between the MadDogs and the Zana Deux to be most appealing to my tastes. The bass on the TH-900 was simply too loose on the Zana Deux whilst the LCD3's signature as a whole didn't really agree with me but if I had to choose an amp for both of these headphones, the Invicta's headphone actually performed well.

I'm not certain but I think the output impedance was the ZD was the issue with the other headphones. Having said that the listed specs of the Mad Dogs & LCD3s do have very similar impedances.

The synergy between the ZD and the MadDogs is crazy though. It's a pity the MadDogs isn't mine.

i thought the TH-900 and zana deux are supposed to sound really good with each other.

That's the ZDSE. Mine is the older ZD with the 12 ohm OI. The newer ZDSE has switchable 3/12 ohm.

Find mine might be an older ZD too but really enjoy it with Th900 as much as V200

What i remember when putting the 900's on my Zana Deux for an extended listen at a meet a while back was that it tightened the bass and and opened them up somewhat.  I will have to listen again if i can get that match at the next meet.

I would really love to hear (or read for that matter) a comparison between a standard ZD and the ZD se with the balanced input upgrade.  Apparently it really steps things up a notch.

Well, I don't think you can buy the original ZD anymore anyway and the ZDSE just makes sense with its switchable OI.

I actually can't stop listening to the MadDogs & my ZD at the moment. Kinda in a dilemma if I should mod my ZD for my TH-900, or make an offer to Musica Acoustics for the MadDogs (and not mod the ZD)...'cos I still don't know how the TH-900s sound off the ZDSE @ 3 ohm.

Will have to plug in my MadDog ver.1 the next time I turn the amp on , just out of curiosity.

current version of MadDog  is 3.2- quite a bargain for the price, if you ask me
