Eddie Current Zana Deux owners - Page 94

Hello everyone! I'm also a proud owner of a ZD and have three headphones: AKG 701's, ATH W-1000's and ATH-AD2000's (listen to these at least 80% of the time). My question is: are there any headphones considered a near ideal match with the ZD and if so, what are they?

thanks,

John

Reading various ZD threads the AD2000 was supposed to be a great match-though I didn't find it much more impressive than my DP1's built in amp. The HD800 finally floored me on the ZDSE-simply amazing. Most reports say the K702 is a poor match-and I couldn't tell you about the W1000.

I just love the look of those rectifiers.

Clayton, do you have a #1 amp choice in your collection or do they each have particular music favorites?

That is a very good question. Since I rotate them quite a bit and feel that I cannot get rid of any of them because they serve their particular music well. But I've been asked before: if I were to pick just my top favorites which would they be? The answer is as difficult as choosing my favorite food, or music, or group. The ever inconstant moon always dictates the mood.

But my top, in no particular order, would be:

WA2, WA4, WA22, Zana Deux SD, and DNA Sonett, Glenn's OTL.

But the choice would differ tomorrow. As varied and appreciated like clothing. Like tubes.

That is why I asked the question the way I did. I appreciate the perspective. Each offers something special.

Thanks for sharing!

Has anyone here used the Stefan AudioArt Endorphin Ribbon Umbilical Power IC for the Zana Deux/SE?

The price is $475 for 3 feet.

Does this cable alone make a noticeable improvement in sound quality compared to the stock cable, assuming both were fully burnt-in? Or is it not worth buying at all? Any feedback from previous/current users would be appreciated.

I wouldn't spend 500 USD on a umbilical cable, but that's me.

Rather save that cash and upgrade the source and/or buy an extra headphone...

There's been plenty of talk about that cable somewhere.  I would have guessed it was in this thread (did you do a thread search?).  The posts were very very positive - so much so that it was hard to believe.  I'm guessing only a few people have the cable. I couldn't spend that king of money on a cable but who knows...

That's very good to hear. Anyway, I already ordered it so only my ears will tell for sure. This is the first audiophile-grade power cable I have ever bought, and it's not even an AC power cord but an umbilical cord made exclusively for a certain model of amp. It better sound good.

songmic, please keep us posted, let us know what you think of the upgrade!

Actually, I've ordered several other upgrades.

1. Penny + Giles potentiometer ($300)

2. Stefan AudioArt Endorphin ribbon umbilical power IC ($500)

3. Mullard ECC35 NOS tube ($300)

4. Audio Magic Super Fuse ($100)

Ultimately, I'll be using all of these upgrades in my ZDSE, but when it arrives I'll first compare the stock power IC, stock driver tube and stock fuse of the stock ZDSE with #2, #3 and #4, respectively. Stay tuned.

Number 3 will most likely influence the most... But that sure is a lot of cash for a driver tube!

It gets costly when playing with 6SN7/6SL7 and 2A3/300B/45's....

I believe so too. NOS tubes from 5-60's are generally superior in sound quality to tubes made nowadays, but they are even more expensive also because they're quite rare and limited in supply. But I have a good feeling the fuse replacement will also yield pleasantly surprising results for its measly price.

From your Headfonia article, I can see that you have a lot of experience in tube rolling. Are there some 6SL7 family of tubes (along with replaceable ones) that you'd recommend?
