I tried cling film too.... but could not get it to stick.

I used small pieces of automotive masking tape (more flexible than the standard variety) and covered the holes. It was SUPER bassy with that mod. Fun, but not to my liking, so I took the tape off. I haven't tried the tape with foam removed.

I'm using them without the foam.

Yeah... it does look like e2c wax guards might work.

I have clingfilm and the sleeve removed on my pair. The bass sounds better now, especially matched with the veggiemod...I recommend these mods to anyone wanting some more from their EX90...I also have some foam earpads on mine, they made them a little more comfy..

I'm going to add some foam earpad covers too. More to protect them from getting scratched and dinged up.

Does the removel of the mesh and foam make the Sonys treble brighter?

The biggest difference IMHO is that the midrange is now much more even with the treble. The treble doesn't project out as much over the previously recessed mids. Much better spectral balance. They dont sound bass-shy to my ears either. The added bass-texture and detail kind of gives an illusion of more bass... but in reality its better bass (more details).

Highly recommended mod.

Oh... the driver inside is still protected with a perforated metal shield with large holes int it. So its not like the driver is totally exposed without the foam.

Aaah...
you noticed my profile update, the EX90 has skipped 2 notches up my ladder with this mod. Past the K240s and stock HD580. Neither of which have the detail resolution of the modded EX90.

I need to spend more time with them and more A/B comparisons with my upper level cans.

In a lot of ways the modded EX90 is better than my SR60. EX90 mids are a little more gentile on the ears than the SR60/Bowls. EX90 mids dont have that penetrating "drive" thats the Grado signature. Yet because they are physically a canal-phone, those "softer" mids still reach out and fill your head.

The SR60 bass is snappy and quick with quick tansients. EX90 bass is warm, wooly and resonant, a bit more sluggish and gushing, yet not sloppy like the K240s or an under-amped DT770.

Now... if we could only fix the stupid J-cord

i agree. this simple little mod has made these cans so much better and seems to give more detail and imo even more spaciousness. they have also climbed up a few notches on my list of favorite cans.

Thankyou Everyone.

I think I should have started my own thread on this mod intead of bringing it up on someone elses mod thread though. With that I wish to apologize to Veggie_musician for this taking over his thread though I did & still do think it may help achieve a more desired sound combined with his mod.

I'm not sure if starting anouther thread concerning this mod so as to not distract from his mod would be better or leaving it here in case it actually works well with his mod ideas.

whatever you think let me know & I will go that direction.

Sincerily; Ron B.

Hey dont worry - Ive added you mod to front page anyway

The other thing de-foaming does is it gives the illusion of increased isolation. I think the improved / more forward mids have a much easier time projecting through ambient noise.

I still find these cans somewhat amp-finicky (although less now than before). IMHO they still sound better through my pimeta/OPA2107, than straight out of my D335.

cool...
