Sennheiser HD 590 Appreciation Thread

I've seen a lot of appreciation threads popping up as of late, and wanted to start one for some phones that I believe are scoffed at and overlooked too much. The HD 590's really are audiophile headphones and are probably the most comfortable headphones that I have ever worn. The are very neutral (to my ears) and very detail oriented, which is great for listening to good recording of acoustic music, but at the same time, they can pump out a vast variety of genres with acurate, pleasing results. Come appreciate an underappreciated headphone!

"You may say they're plastic, but I say they're fantastic!!!"

More comfortable than 595s...

I like the 595 at 50 ohms.

The only thing I liked with the HD590 was that they were very light and very comfortable. Perhapse the most comfortable I've ever used.

HD 590. Very very comfy, detailed, very good soundstage, easy to drive, good with acoustic music and movies.

Um, I find the bumping car stereo that just drove by and shook the tile off the roof and broke the windows with its highs to be slightly more nuetral than the 590.

Everything sounds different to different people on different systems

i finally fixed the headphile HD590 cable i bought cheap because a wire had broken. so this is the first time i'm listening to them with this familiar cable upgrade. this is also the first time i listened to them amped by my h5. i can't attest which one makes more impact but the HD590s now sound much more balanced. the bass has calmed down and the mids have come forward a bit. they certainly sound better than they ever have. because of their uber comfort i've kept these for movie watching and will continue to do so now that they are sounding pretty darn good.

one thing though - if you want to hear what the sennheiser veil is, just jump to a pair of K701s. yeah, the AKGs blow the senns out of the water but in regards to SQ that is an unfair comparison. it was the veil that really surprised me.

anyway, i still enjoy the 590s which impresses me since i've had them for something like 4 years or so.

I think they are superior to the 595s I just sold.

I got them last year for about 100 shipped new.

Calary,

True, true - if like something, you like it - maybe one likes Bose triports or Sony earbuds - but that doesn't make them nuetral.

Obviously there are subjective elements but there are ways to show that certain cans have certain sonic signatures - such as the 590 being anything but nuetral.

Of course, with particularly non-nuetral phones such as the 590, even common consensus will demonstrate that very vividly.

There are good reasons they have the frequency graph they have; there are good reasons they have the reputation they have; there are good reasons that Senn marketed them as they did, and discountinued them.

Heck, there is a reason for the size of this thread after this much time and the praise of their comfort rather than their sound - or their detail rather than their nuetrality (by the way, the older silver Grado 325 has great detail too and you may even find someone who thinks it's nuetral - and heck, compared to the 590 it very well may be).

Thumping bass. Its just better balanced than the 595s. The 595s to me were just too weak with bass.

jrosenth,

I see what you're saying. Maybe I'm mixing up neutral with detailed; they just seem to make the music that I listen to sound the way that it does in person.
