Sennheiser HD580 sounding like HD600? - Page 2

Does anyone know if the 600 grills are still available?
I bought the grills not long ago from RVA Canada, very good price. It took just a couple of days to complete the order, so I assume they didn't order them from Sennheiser.

I've had the HD580 for a little while. I never liked it much because it sounded a little muddy and not open/airy enough (K701 fan here). I would have sold them a month ago if I wasn't waiting for my HD600 grills to come.

Just last week, my HD600 grills finally came. I wasn't expecting much difference, but I listened to them a bit after changing the grills, and I'm actually a little surprised how much I like them now. The main difference is that they seem a bit more airy and clear. Not sure whether this is placebo or not, but I'm sure that I never thought the HD580 was this good.

I think I am still going to sell them eventually, since I still prefer my K701 and DT880, and I find the HD580 to clamp my (big) head too hard. However, if I didn't already have so many headphones I'd be happy to use it as my secondary headphone after the K701.

Been sitting here bouncing back anbd forth between the 2 cans.... Stock HD580 versus the Darth mod (600 grilles, 650 cable, socket modded foam sheet, paint removed).

The darth can is definitely more.... everything. More forward and in the head sounding, more bright and aggressive, more detailed, more bass kick and impact. Yet still retaining a good sense of spatial separation and distance. I think the 650 cable adds some bass impact and the hole in the foam brightens the upper mids and treble.

I am not sure individually, what percentage all the mods account for, but the total sum is a much more engaging and dynamic sound.

Good Luck modders!! may the force be with you

I'm getting my 580's in 2 days. Where can I find the best deal on 650 cables for them besides ebay? Thanks.

Direct from Sennheiser is cheaper than eBay, but it takes longer to recieve the cable.

It doesn't have to be a laid-up carbon fiber weave w/ epoxy to qualify as a fiber-reinforced polymer using carbon fiber. Think of it as the difference between a boat hull and body filler. Both use glass fibers as reinforcment, but while one uses laid-up sheets of glass fibers, the other uses loose fibers mixed throughout.

true... many radio control hobbies use this kind of carbon reinforced molded material... pet name "Graphite".

Simple way to check if you have pure plastic or carbon reinforced plastic is with a digital multi-meter. The carbon is a semi-conductor and will conduct current, so ohm-ing out the material will yield a small resistance.

Used to piss me off... When I was racing RC model cars, I would have a fully charged battery pack (loose cells), mounted in the chassis. 30 minutes later the cells would be warm and partially discharged. The carbon reinforced plastic was serving as a resistor and discharging the cells.
