IC: For Trade? Rotel RCD-991AE for Turntable?

EDIT 8/27/06: This unit is now on Audiogon.

http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/auc....00526&auc&3&4&

What I have:

I have a Rotel RCD-991AE and am looking to trade it for a turntable and/or turntable/phono pre setup. I bought the player from a local AudioAsylum member (who is a really good guy), though he did not buy it new. I can take pictures next week, but I'm going camping after work today, so it would have to wait until then. The previous owner did not have the original boxes, but I believe I have the manual somewhere.

I don't know a ton about the player other than what I can find in a google search. I'm sure you can and will do the same I know it was Rotel's top of the line player for a while and has HDCD decoding, balanced outs and some sort of dither setting which I can't really tell the difference in.

Here's why I'm looking to trade:

Right now I have an NAD C320BEE and would like to get an NAD CD player so that I can use the same remote for both. I have also had a lot of interest in picking up a turntable and phono pre, as a lot of stuff I listen to is only released on vinyl. I have a Toshiba DVD player that is a bit noiser, but not so dramatic a difference from the Rotel that I can justify the difference. In fact, I have a very hard time differentiating between digital sources (through my speaker setup), so why keep such a high-end player? Maybe your system is more resolving than mine.

What I'd like to trade for:

Any reputable turntable of equal value....OR a lesser value turntable and a phono pre. Something from Rega or something similiar would be excellent, but I'm open to anything.

It's a shot in the dark, but maybe you're out there somewhere

Thanks for looking!

For the record, I'm not really interested in any trades other than for a turntable at the moment.

Thanks for looking!

Bump.

Thorens, Rega, Goldring, Music Hall, Pro-Ject, SL-1200....I know you're out there

I can't even find a single picture of a Rotel RCD-991AE out there. I'm slightly interested, but there seems to be no information at all.

Here's what I could come up with quickly:

This picture looks pretty accurate, except mine says "AE Audiophile Edition" silk-screend onto the top right corner. I'm still not sure whether there is a difference between the AE and non-AE versions. I've never found a definitive answer on that.

There seems to be a decent amount of information on this player if you google "rotel 991". If you (or anyone) are interested, I can pull it off the shelf tonight and take some photos of the actual unit.

I have the remote and *maybe* the manual, but I do not have the original boxes. I've never done much business through the mail, but I hope (if needed), Tom Hankins can vouch for my non-original box shipping. I traded him a rack for a NAD integrated and I think he was satisfied with the overkill packaging.

Still available...thanks for the interest so far. I'd definitely prefer an even trade, as cash is scarce right now. I'm not entirely against a turntable plus cash if the table is not of equal value.

Thanks for looking

From what I could tell, this AE edition is probably worth closer to $800-$1000 than the $300 or so the Rotel 991 sometimes goes for used. Just to let you know. Basically out of my price range now that I found that out, but free bump for ya.

I know it's fairly rare, but what makes you think it's worth such a high figure? I would Audiogon it and just buy the table I want, but I've never done that before.

It is very rare - though not as rare as the 990 which had the legendary Philips CDM9-Pro transport. These were Rotels - just how good a CD player can we make without going nuts attempts - and they have never ventured into that kind of level since. I watched these players for a long while never quite able to bring myself to part with so much cash - I have owned many Rotel players. My guess is that on Audiogon you would easily get $500 for the AE. On eBay you may get more as bidding on these can get silly but it is of course risky unless you set a high and thus offputting reserve.

In context you should get *at least* a Rega Planar 3/RB300 in exchange.

$300 is pretty optimistic. I have never seen one that low or frankly I would have bought it myself - the 975 goes for 250 - 300 and that is a much less esoteric player - though it was also a very nice one itself. You ever sell your 855 ?

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll hang on to it until someone who has really been looking for this particular player finds me. I may Audiogon it if I feel like getting into all that (though I really don't ).

Thanks again
