USB 1.0 not good enough for 2006 Bithead? - Page 2

Now I just have to wait for my Total Bithead to get here and I can see for myself how it works on my computer. Man, I hate waiting....

The USB DAC uses a USB 1.1 interface, which is why it is limited to 48khz through usb - that is the bandwidth limitation of USB 1.1 at 12mBps. But within that restriction, there is no bandwidth issue. I don't believe it even supports USB 2 in the first place directly, with USB 2 devices operating along the 1.1 protocol when connected to it.

If you have sonic issues, contact HeadRoom, because there is no issue with USB per se except for jitter, but even if it's at 6xxps as it is with the other HR DACs that use the same BB USB chip (which is where the jitter comes from, so such jitter is a reasonable extrapolation), that is not a reason for it to sound 'bad', just not as good as it might otherwise.

And yes, it is a pain to have only 2 ports. I'm always unplugging/plugging things depending on what devices I'm using.
Maybe consider upgrading to a PCI USB 2.0 card, their prices are inexpensive nowadays ($6 to $10). Many of them have 4 external plus 1 internal port, and that's dividing USB 2.0's max bandwidth of 480Mbps amongst them.

What about the possibility that your pcdp sounds better to you than the dac inside the bithead.

Maybe it's not a bandwith but a power-problem. The older USB-Ports didn't had the same current specs as the newer ones.

you know what, i think there is a PCI slot with usb ports, so if you buy that, you could just hook it up to your computer and you'd have usb 2.0... im not 100% sure on it though.

actually, here's a link http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_g...ch=usb+2.0+pci

you can find it cheaper than that though.

oh yeah, another problem that could be... the drivers for the total bithead mjight be compatible with only the newer versions of windows... which windows o/s are you running? if your answer is 98' then that might be the problem. i suggest you e-mail headroom and ask (before even considering about buying the usb 2.0 PCI card).

The PCI usb ports is a great idea!

Donunus: The pcdp does sound pretty good, but nothing compared to the Bithead plugged into my work computer. So, probably not.

ok thats weird. I thought the digital output of a pc playing the same song would be the same whether usb1 or 2 as long as it could deliver the data fast enough. Kind of makes me wonder how much data were losing here.

Yeah, listening to music through the bithead at home sounds like the music is coming through a plastic tube or something. It's pretty bad (sounds worse than straight out of the SBlive).

Sounds like too much latency. Have you tried (a) updating the drivers or (b) see if you can change the IRQ that the USB is using (check out the BIOS settings), it could be sharing with something more imporant and getting resource starved.
