HD555 cable

Thread Starter
I'm getting some Sennheiser HD-555's and I'd like to know if replacing the cable would be a smart move. For now, I'll be using my Marantz SR7500 receiver to power the headphones and maybe someday move up to a dedicated headphone amp. So would replacing the cable help with anything? Also, I'm not much of a DIY person but depending on how hard it is, could I make one myself? Thanks

Oh good I wanted to ask the same thing but I dont want to make a dup post. I want to shorten and re-terminate mine and I have amp coming so I was thinking maybe a replacement instead if its cheap enough. I know to make your own you need the special connectors though.

The 555 and 595, unlike the 580/600/650, do not have user-replaceable cables.

Unless the user is also a head-fi member, of course.

If you want to shorten and reterminate I say do it. It's cheap and easy.

However, if you want to recable you're in for a long ride. Opening up the headphone housings is tricky, and they have a single-entry cable. You'll need to either rewire up through the headband, which is a nightmare, rewire to dual entry (one cable to each earcup) which is a nightmare, or cut the cable close to the headphone and solder to the little end, which is kind of unsightly.

If you decide to recable, it should only be because you want to figure out how to do it and own something you built.

Otherwise, spend the money on upgrading to the better-sounding HD595.

Changing the cable should be fairly easy. A complete recabling may take some undocumented handy-work though, if you want to do it yourself.

Actually, HD555/HD595 are easy to upgrade the cable. Check out the HD595 thread to see some impressions of the headphones with upgraded cables.

It seems easy if you just take a cable made for almost any other single sided can and chop the end off and solder to a new set of pins or ones removed from the stock cable. Or even go all out and mod it into a Y style and just solder straight into the drivers from what I've read. That requires drilling into the right side which I dont know if I'm ready to do yet. I might try it out on my throw away HD570s first.
