Should I get those speaker sets from ebay?help

I'm looking for some decent speakers to hook up to my vinyl source.

Been using one of those bose ipod plug-in speakers the past few months... I've been satisfied, but I guess I don't know any better. When looking at ebay, I've found there are some 5.1 speaker sets available for some very very low prices. I guess these are probably crap, but the prices are good and there are 5.

My budget is around $200, so I'm looking pretty basic. Should also be relatively easy to hook up to my source. Any help appreciated!

Buy used whenever you can - save up enough to buy some decent speakers that will last and that you'll enjoy for years. I'm afraid $200 for a 5.1 system will not get you anything that will sound any good.

Oh no, don't buy the cheapies on eBay. Have you seen the thread on the coaxial Insignia at Best Buy? $40 a pair and they supposedly sound good. Buying three pairs (for a 5.1 setup) would be $120. Not too bad.

If you're willing to DIY or go used, you can do pretty well for $200. Take a look aorund and let us know what you're interested in. When you can give us some more detail about what you're after, you'll get good recommendations.

Why do you need 5.1 if you're running vinyl as a source?

I guess you're right, I don't need 5.1, I just figured 5 speakers was the best (more is better mentality).

Then your mind needs a little readjustment, I guess: If you have the same budget for a) six or b) two speakers, in which case would you exspect more quality per speaker? (Need a hint? I'd think, it should be b. )

P.S.: Mentioning the components involved could be helpful...

I would stick with stereo - unless you might want to have a Home Cinema (HC) system (but you may need a bigger budget).

I went down the HC road about 5 years ago (spent ~ £1300 on extra speakers, amps etc). It has not been out of its box for over 3 years.

Lini: Isn't 6 > 2? What am I missing?

:-)

Uneducated people often prefer the sound of two channel music played from multiple speakers placed in the ceiling or some such place. There is no accounting for taste.

Quite true. Back when I was in middle school all my classmates were dying to be the first in the neighborhood with 5 channel surround sound, despite how craptastic their speakers were. If you look in the used market you can find a very decent pair of speakers for $200-300. Some brands of smaller speakers that I've enjoyed would be Blueroom, Diamond, Mission, Infinity and JBL.
