Help: demodulating audio from Rf (cable tv)

Hopefully you guys can help me out here. I've got my surround sound system all hooked up and I can watch DVDs and VHS in 5.1 or ProLogic II (simulated). My surround sound receiver has the following inputs: optical, coaxial, and RCA. I've been attempting to devise a way to get the audio from cable TV and run it into my receiver, but its my understanding that I need an RF-demodulator of some sort. I recently tried a friend of mine's digital cable box which had digital outputs and it worked like a charm (on some channels due to the fact that I used coaxial, so i was limited to the digitally broadcasts channels). I have also looked into the option of a new DVD player that has RF-in and RCA-outs, but i am concerned as to whether the RCA-outs will only output the audio from DVDs and exclude the audio from cable TV. I just need any means to get Cable TV audio to my reciever so i can feed it prologic II and get a nice surround sound for when im watching the tube. How do some of you have your cable TV audio incorporated into your surround sound systems?

does your TV have rca outs on the back? Most newer ones do.

I don't think there's a such thing as a (quality) DVD player with RF in. The other option is a cable box like you mentioned. Call your cable company they may provide them for a very low charge or possibly free.

I think, but wouldn't swear to it, that most of the RF converters you see in the stores are modulators, not demodulators. Basically a cable box is a demodualtor becuase you still need the tuner, etc to change channels.

Thanks for the response jefemeister. Actually, my tv is old and therefore has no RCA outs. So old, in fact, that I have to use an RF modulator to connect it with my DVD player (tv only has rf-input). You are right when you say that most of what you find in stores are rf modulators, which I have. Video quality is obviously not my primary concern, but audio is. A cable box (general term), or a new TV sounds like the answer.

yeah, depending on how large you want to go, replacing the whole TV may actually be the cheapest solution to boot. Especially with "back to school sales"--a quick search brings up 27" flat tubes for $300 @ Circuit City.

I just bought a used tv from my buddy for $50 cause he needed to get rid of it, and once I got it home I realized what I had forgotten this entire time... the headphone jack. Wow, i'm an idiot. Dolby Prologic II works great now, and I've got a new tv as well.
