First off those things look like big salt shakers

So i am assuming those are just put on there for demo or is it actually on there?

The amp needs to be modified to actually run these.

BTW what brand are they?

Correct ... the amp that will be using these is already at Singlepower for mods.

Brand .... Raytheon.

I am glad you are doing all this "for us".

I can't tell you how much I like your tube talk.

With the addition of my new source, I am considering going ballanced. You keep up all this research, and I may keep my MPX3 and just send it back for some mods.

You wont run 6528's with a mpx3 circuit. The 6528 tube demands nearly 5 amps of heater current per tube. You would need atleast a Supra power transformer plus a second beefy transfomer just to run the heaters.

I have made nice amps with transformers just for the heaters. It works out well and gives a lot of control.

I was fortunate to receive a 6414 tube and adapter yesterday from Mikhail. Amazing driver tube, especially when paired with the 6BL7gts as outputs on the MPX3 SE on 425v setting. The 6414 delivers a very clean, clear, tight sound with a very solid bass performance and a gorgeous midrange. So far this is one of my favorite tube combinations.

Definitely a winner.

I tried a Tung Sol blackplate 5814A for gain duty today using an ECC adapter. The 5814A's seem to mate very well with the SLAM PPX3 driving 5687 or 7044 output tubes. I never see this Tung Sol tube mentioned among the best 5814A's but this tube is excellent in this application.

The characteristics of this tube in the SLAM PPX3 amping a senn 595/ 120 ohm headphone are a weighty, powerful bass, punchy dynamics, a rich slightly dark tone, a surprisingly dimensional soundstage and a creamy smooth treble.

The Tung Sol blackplate 5814A along with the Raytheon 5814 two mica, blackplate, D getter tube and Raytheon 5814A three hole blackplate, triple mica tube are my favorites .... so far.

I remember when they were almost giving away the 5814 tubes. They sure have gotten expensive but they are a fine tube.

Those are 6528A power tubes.

Well done~ more power isn't overkill, power is never enough.

I've use 6BX7 into output with my, they're better them lots 6SN7 that I've used before. I love 6BX7s now, maybe try some 6BL7s.

5687 will better? I need to dig some tubes...

I wouldn't say the 5687s are necessarily better as synergy does play a role as well as what you value in your presentation style. The 5687 has a smaller more precise soundstage than the 6BL7s (which in turn are warmer than the 6BX7s). The bass is more concise (for lack of a better word) and doesn't resonate as much as the BL7 or the BX7GTs.

I actually still like the 6SN7's as either input or output, they don't have as much slam as other combos but in the SDS-XLR they sound smoother and IMO have more bass.

BTW the 6414 is an excellent tube, smooth & clean with good soundstage.

The 5965 distorts and does not work correctly; atleast in the MPX3. I would not recommend using this one without a circuit mod. I am going to be trying out the 12av7 soon.
