I like the 12bh7 more than the 12au7. The brands of 12bh7 I like are RCA and Sylvania. There are several variations for the 12au7 .... 5814a/ 5963/ 6067/ 6189 .... so I have not tried them all.

I still like to go back to the 7N7/ 14N7 .... which is a 6SN7GT with a different loctal base. But I havent really missed the 6SN7GT's. In my amps right now I have the following tubes for gain .... 14N7 sylvania tall bottle/ Amperex 7062/ Sylvania 6GU7/ GE 6414W/ Tung Sol clear glass 12SN7GT/ RCA clear top 6CG7 and RCA 5965.

I especially like the GE 6414W, Philips SQ and Amperex 7062, RCA blackplate 6CG7, Sylvania 6GU7, Sylvania 7N7/14N7, RCA 12AV7 and Sylvania 12FQ7.

Flavor change for me. I like both and enjoy both. Every time I switch between the two, I seem to confirm this.

By the way, has anyone tried 12au7 as output with 6sn7 as gain - or does this not make sense ?

The 12au7 is a low power tube .... and while it can be used .... I think this tube works best in the SP amps for gain only. The 12au7 will be very current limited as an output tube.

Is there any significant difference between the Raytheon and GE/IBM 6414's? I have a Raytheon now- its very dynamic and upfront, extended highs, a fun change for funk, big band, and rock.

The Raytheon blackplate 6414's are a little richer sounding and a tad less bright vs the GE 6414W grayplate. I use the 6414W with the darker tubes in my collection. The 6414W has a nice synergy with the darker output tubes like the 6bl7gt and my senns.

I now have a pair of 2c51 and and a pair ECC (6DJ8) adaptors.

I have the following 2c51 tubes:-

Syl GB
Tungsol
WE 2c51/396A
Bendix 2c51

I have the TS in at the moment

Rob, I'd be interested in your impressions of the TS and the WE, as compared to the Bendix. I am totally head over heals in love with the Bendix in my system, and can't imagine anything could sound better. But Mikhail says some think the TS is even better than the Bendix, and of course the WE is way popular too. Anyway, I look forward to your comments, as I just bought a spare Bendix from Mikhail and am thinking of trying a TS at some point.

I have had both in the Extreme and I like the tung sol 2c51 better. The Bendix is a little more refined but the tung sol seems more vibrant and alive sounding. I havent tried the 2c51 in my MPX3 SLAM SE yet.

BTW, I see some ads on ebay and elsewhere for various tubes with three or four digit codes or production dates. Can anybody (Earl?) advise as to what they mean? For example, there's a Western Electric now on ebay with a code of 7739, and another WE pair with a code of 226 and 413. I'm guessing the 7739 means it was made in 1977, but what does the 226 mean? I recall reading something somewhere that said that in the three-digit code, the first digit is the year in the 1940's or 1950's when it was produced, but how do you know which decade? And is this even correct? People are throwing out these codes like it is obvious to everyone what they mean, so I figure some of you guys probably know.

Phil with three digit codes the first digit is the year but as to which decade I wouldn't know.Sometimes it's possible to tell by the construction.

I have only tried the TS and for the last few hours WE 2c51/396A,too early to make any comments but both have nice sound so far.I do like the TS.

The soundstage with these tubes is the first thing you notice...it's big

IMO the Bendix is more airy sounding but with somewhat less bass than the TS,the WE 396A is smilar to the Bendix but smoother.

Tried Tung Sol 5687 o-ring + 2*ECC99 on Supra, and got quite thumping and fun sound. That TS is nice tube to have in the gain position also. In treble it did not lack any, but the bass was kicking well.
