The 5670 is the ruggedized military version of the 2c51 .... and the 396A is Western Electric's version of the 2c51. The 2c51 and 5670 have different heater current requirements and slightly different spec's so these two are definitely different tubes

Western Electric made their 396A based on the 2c51 but produced a tube that has a reputation for higher performance and construction quality .... hence the greater demand and higher price tag. So this is a situation like with the WE 421A where WE made their own version of the 5998. Basically they are the same tube but the WE version has better section matching and construction quality. You can buy a standard 5998 Tung Sol for $25 while the same seller will charge $90-100 for a WE 421A. The WE 396A also commands a higher price than standard 2c51's.

Is anyone using this tube (2C51) with output tubes, other than the 5687?

I like the 6BL7GTAs in the output at high power, driven with 6414s. I like this combination better than the 6414 driving the 5687s.

What output tubes do people use with the 12AU7 varieties?

John, the 2c51 will work in your SLAM SE with the 6bl7gta's @ high voltage.

I am going to use the 2c51 in the Extreme.

The 12au7 will work with either the 6bl7gta's or the 5687's. I liked the 5814a = 12au7 with 5687's. I am not sure I have tried the 12au7 with the 6bl7gta's@ high voltage .... bit it will definitely work?

Yes 6BL7GT at 400V.More soundstage than ever before but to my ears with simple well recorded CDs there is a little impact and bass missing? Any else hear this? I have a bunch of new driver tubes but I an 99% sure I used this combo and loved it!

6BL7GT The best combo so far for my MPX3 SE. Great micro detail and impact, plus an "O" so rare combo of clairity, and air mixed in with a great sence of musical involvement. (tight bass Too)

I have been using a RCA 6gu7 driving two Bendix 6080's in the "Beast" and getting the best sound I have ever heard out of a Grado. The headphone I am using is the M2Si. Whats interesting is this tube combo sounds off with my senn 595's; somewhat closed in and dull. I substituted a GE 6414W for gain and the sound was back to "awesome". I guess my point is that the grado and senns definitely seem to like different tube sets.

Conversely, I dont know if this is true with the output tubes. I am getting great results using the 5998/6080 and 6as7's with high or low impedence headphones .... if the gain tube is complimentary.

I hope the experts don't mind my interrupting

But I am playing 2 of my new 6SN7 NOS tubes (kenrads of some kind) with a 6414 and it sounds just beautiful. I also got some old Sylvanias of some kind Vt-231 and they actually sound even better as outputs. I am beginning to think one could plug 300 W light bulbs into to these amps and they would still sound quite lovely.

Any suggestions for a gain tube(/adapter) when using the MPX 3 as a preamp?

Pretty happy now with a NOS 6sn7 for gain , and a couple of old 5687 TungSol D getter flatplates for output, but would like to try something new. (Needs to be non microphonic)

ECC adaptor for 12xx7s.

12au7/12bh7 and its likes seems to work great for pre out.

I second this recommendation. The ECC ADAPTER #1 is by far the most versatile. The 12bh7 is an excellent tube. I use the 6 volt only version of the 12bh7 called the 6gu7 with the necessary 6cg7 adapter.

12bh7 over the 12au7?
I currently use a black or gray CNU 6sn7 for gain.

There are so many variastions, I have only scratched the surface. So far,
CBS (or Raytheon) 5814 (blk plate), RCA 12au7 - both clear top and blk pate, Matsu****a 12au7, TS 12au7 (blk glass) is my favorite.

I just started with 12bh7 and like the few I have tried. Also 6211 and 5963 is interesting.

Above also depends on what output tube etc. it is combined with.

Sometimes, I am not sure if I am looking for something I like more or just enjoying the variation

The variation is a lot of fun . Is anyone really preferring the new tubes (out of the ECC adapters) over the *SN7 varieties, or is it just a flavor change?
