Favorite music gifts

what have music have you gotten as a gift that you treasure?

-magical mystery tour (the beatles)
my dad taped this for me from the speakers on his sony turntable hi-fi in the '70's. i loved it, and fell asleep to it every night for a long time, usually drifting off to "blue jay way".

-stop making sense (talking heads)
a friend gave me this tape in the early '80's, and it totally got me back into rock music. until then i was a strict classical music fan.

-wooden strings/do you want to come down?
in college a friend who's dad was a record exec (thus he got lots of cool free records) made this mix for me on his nakamichi dragon deck. i still have it, and on the end of the tape i can hear him laughing faintly (picked up by the record needle - no cd's at all on the tape). i can still see him sitting by the deck, picking lint off the needle as he cues up another record.

-einstein on the beach (philip glass)
a fancy double cd of the new performance of the opera. i was blown away at the thoughtfulness of this gift. nobody and i mean nobody i knew liked philip glass, except me.

oscillations from the anti-sun (stereolab)
a gift from my wife, a 3 cd set + dvd of rare sterolab material, most of which was new to me: treasure. and she doesn't even like the lab.

in 8th grade, my friend gave me a sgt. pepper lonely hearts club band cd.

back then, i thought it was crap and wondered why everyone thought the beatles were teh ****. but now i love the whole album and am more open minded about older music.
