There is no Pro Sig. We just call it Pro Sig sometimes to make sure people know it's pro bias. And the Signature's technically higher up on Stax's hierarchy than the Lambda Pro, and the diaphragm is the thinnest Stax has ever made, so it should theoretically be better than the Lambda pro technically. Having said that, I have not heard a Lambda Pro or an SR-404 myself, so I'll leave the comparison to those who own both. Also, there's no point to making an RCA to XLR adapter other than a more secure connection on one end. However, there IS a point to having XLR cables connecting an unbalanced source to a balanced amp, since XLR fares better over long distances, and is a more robust connection. The best use, though, obviously is, XLR-XLR balanced source, balanced amp.

The Sig was Stax's attempt to improve on the Pro. In most respects it is better, at least from a technical standpoint, but has an unpleasent resonance at about 3.5kHz that can make it a little shrill. It also is less airy sounding than the Pro and original Lambda.

Ultimately, when deciding which of the eleven different models of lambda to pick, one should factor in ones own tastes and priorities.

More stuff arrived today!

So all the earspeakers have arrived, but I'm still waiting on the amp I want a listen!

All you need to do now is get rid of that K701 and HF-1. Being obsolete as they are. But no amp eh? Tell you what, just lend them to me and ill keep them warm for you until it arrives.

And of course the 404 is called a Signature on the headband/arc assembly. I see that the 404 diaphragm is listed as 1.35 microns whereas the old Signature states 1 micron on an old brochure. I wonder how accurate the 1 micron figure is, or how significant given that earlier models were 4 microns. I once sent a message to Stax on this issue but got no reply.

Only one or two more sleeps now Jonathan

I bought a KGSS (unbalanced zzz version) a couple months ago, and just got around to getting the 404's. This is my first venture into ES headphones and I am impressed. Everything is so crystal clear and light sounding. I have read a lot of the complaints about slam which scared me a bit, but from my perspective, thats completely overblown. I swear a feel something in these, maybe its just so clear that I am duped into thinking I'm feeling impact. Vocals sound soooooo natural to me or at least so unique that it appears natural. Lots of old music to experience through this new lens.

Anyway, do I get a t-shirt.... a newsletter..... or something for joining team stax?

The Corda Headfive is on its way. Judging by the speed that other UK buyers are getting theirs, it should arrive on Monday! The HF-1 are milamber's, but if the HF-1/H5 synergy is good, I'll probably get something Grado too!

Yesterday, I also got a pair of DT770-80 Pro and im616 from a trade so it's all good, but that's for another thread/day...

Yup, and I can't wait to get a listen!

Currently, my 404 are very well protected thanks to Duggeh's generous donation: a white plastic (yes! real plastic!) bag... My other cans are relegated to within an inferior, 100% degradable, Tesco's bag

Got Bias?

Well, what do you think?

I use a plastic bag too. I made the mistake of paying 20$ for the stax cover. Sure it looks nicer, but the plastic bag does the same job for free. For aesthetics, cut the bottom off, those two handles serve no purpose. There are plastic bags that are supple and others that are ruffly. The supple kind wont make as much noise, look out for those.

ARGH! I don't know if I'd actually be able to wear that shirt down the street... No one would understand, let alone myself I've got some reading up to do..
