The Stax thread - Page 17

I love that review. On one of the albums the reviewer says "One of extreme facility and effortlessness - as though the air moved by itself without any material intermediary. There's nothing there making sound" was the instinctive assessment of my subconscious neuro mechanism."

So true

Plugged the Lambda Pros into the Normal bias jack on the SRM-1/MKII. It doesn't sound bad but it definitely lacks some bottom end. The volume is considerably lower. There is a hollow quality to the sound even if you crank it up. The soundstage collapses a bit. It's not bad, it's just not the Lambda Pro goodness I'm used to.

I may hit this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Stax-SRM-313-Cla...QQcmdZViewItem

Is there anything I need to know about this auction? It seems 100v is the norm for the SRM-313, but someone mentioned earlier that it should work fine out of a US outlet. It should be ~$390 shipped. I would check out PriceJapan ($415-$430 shipped) but I don't have the required verified PayPal account.

With the dollar in its current state, thats less than half the UK rrp.

Just double checked my 313 and it is the 117v version. You may wanna wait on the e-bay one. But I do remember reading that there are some jumpers that can be reconfigued to change it to the appropriate voltage .

Interesting. Where did you get it from?

Do you use a transformer, J-Pak (I noticed that yours is 100v)?

Azure,
IMHO wait for an SRM 1 Mk 2 Professional.
This amp came in 4 versions
1. The original low bias headphones version (as you showed in one of your posts). This will not drive any high bias phones correctly - they won't sound as good as they could - although low bias phones will sound superb.
2. The Professional version has a low bias and a high bias output - a good buy as this one will be able to drive almost any Stax electrostatic correctly.
3. The PP version had 2 high bias outputs only.
4. The ATR version was a Professional version with a higher grade volume control and a separate balance control (which looks like it was accomplished via a hole in the top plate)
Personally, I would suggest that you look for the Professional version - the most popular and flexible.
The SRM 313 will not let you play a low bias phone, which restricts you from listening to the earlier models.

Duggeh,
I always forget one of the higher voltage drive amps. I'd love to hear (or even see) and SRM T2. Someone on this board has one - did they post photos?

Well, I never had any plans to try out any other STAX earspeakers after getting the 404's (Other than maybe the Lambda Pro's). My only reason for being hesitant on the SRM 1 Mk 2 is because it was designed for the Lambda Pro's and it's brighter upper end (So I'm guessing it'd tame the highs a bit, and the last thing I want with this STAX rig is an even calmer and more relaxed presentation with tamed highs).

Some 313's do infact have both a low and high bias outlet(mine does).Only recently did they change it to two (Pro) high bias outlets.

The SrM 1 Mk 2 Pro sounds great driving a Lambda Nova Signature and the Omega 2 - I would actually prefer it if it WAS darker, but that didn't happen.

There are a few photos kicking about. Nomad posted some a little while back when he was talking about a better amp for his SR-Omega. Cant find the thread though.

Okay then, to start us off; compare and contrast:

Is it not written somewhere that it is one's inalienable rights to listen to Stax at least once in one's lifetime?!

Mm... Stax T2...

How much do those things usually go for?
