The Stax thread - Page 160

I thought that The Stax Thread would be interested to know that STAX has commited to exhibit at the International Meet in San Jose this April! TTVJ is an authorized STAX reseller, and Todd has arranged for Yama's Enterprises, Ltd., the official US distributor, to attend the meet and exhibit the STAX line-up. Sweet!

Gear mentioned in this thread:

To me, it was fairly self-explainatory just by looking at it.

The one connected to that bit of tin that runs along the outside of the driver is the bias supply, and the other two are the + and - phase of the audio signal. Mixing up the latter two will only reverse the absolute phase of the music, but you should be able to find out which is which with an oscilloscope.

Oooh, nice.

Someone ask Todd nicely, and he might let you spirit the 4070 away for a bit so you can listen to it through the ES-1s and Aristeaus' in attendance.

Is this good enough?

No, eBay is still disguising bidders identities with bids over $200.

No, my bids still seem to be incognito. I think it is still occurring with all bids over $200.

Thanks, we are all very pleased with their addition. I bet Wmcmanus will bring his 4070 also, which makes for some nice comparo possibilities.

We now have STAX, Woo Audio, Headamp, and Sennheiser coming, along with members/Tyll bringing at least two HEV90s, ES-1, Aristeaus, and more. Depending on room availability, member table space, and interest level, we *might* even have an electrostatic-only demo room. Sounds pretty nice...

You can visually identify each pin. One has a wire coming off the terminal and onto the back stator, one has a wire that goes into the plastic housing and that would be the bias and one wire goes on the outside of the housing to the front stator. You can always check the wires with an ohm meter to find the correct one.

Anyone know how to open up one of the SR-001 earpieces, im getting a persistant buzzing crackling noise in the left channel when theyre charged.

I'm hoping that by the time I'm ready some of the RWA Sig 30s will be up for sale at nice prices
I'm hooked up and listening to this setup right now! The SR-X Mk III is richer, rounder, slightly more rolled off on top than the SR-404. A bit closed in, but simultaneously a bit more real sounding. Luxurious.

There are many variables here:

- The SR-X pads are worn right down. I need to order a new set. Presumably this affects the sound

- The Aleph 3 is great with the SRX; however, I forgot that I'd have to attach a preamp and two more sets of interconnects... my only extra pre at the moment is an Adcom 710, not terrible but certainly not great

- Both sets of extra ICs are basically generic

- The interconnects feed through the passthru on the SR-006tII

- I am of course using the SRD-7/SB transformer

So it's tough to compare the SR-X setup directly with the SR-404/SR-006tII setup... the signal is passing through about a zillion extra stages and cables to get to my SR-Xes.

I'll play around with the variables a bit as I get used to these... all very interesting!

P.S. I wish I had gotten an SR-006ta as part of my 4040 from Audiocubes... it had a Pro and a Normal socket, so I would have been able to do more direct comparison between the cans. Unfortunately the new SR-006tII has only two Pro sockets, which is useless to me. (Is there any relatively easy way to convert one of them to Normal, assuming I could find a 6-pin socket to install?) It's annoying, because Audiocubes depicted the SR-006ta but shipped me the SRr-006tII

P.P.S. Another variable is driving the SR-X with a real power amp... you can sense the extra headroom. And I don't need to turn the power up nearly as loud. No, I don't know what the gain/impedance calculation is from the Adcom/Aleph 3 --> SR-X compared to the 006tII --> SR-404, but it certainly feels like considerably more current is being directed at the SR-Xes.

Truer words have not been spoken. There is some major synergy with the Pass amps & STAX cans.

Suspicious looking listing there, but an SR-5?

You can sorta do a comparison by plugging the Lambdas into the SRD-7 as well, even though it's low bias it may still surprise you.

Looks legit to me. A Hungarian guy, according to the listing. No idea what the reserve will be, though.

Well, I've been rocking away this week to my new (to me that is) SRM-T1/ED-1/Lambda Signature combo.

Gotta say, so far there isn't really that much difference between the Lambda Pro and the Lambda Sig. I'd take either, if forced to choose I'd still take the Pro, but the Signature is growing on me.

The ED-1 is a strange beast....still haven't made up my mind about it. i want to like it, I really do. There are some things it does that I like, but it's a big differenece from just the straight signal from source to amp...it's going to take a little while to get used to the new sound and evaluate it.

Anyone else have experience with the ED-1? What do you think?

Cheers,
thrice
