Discharging Stax

I have two questions. Given I'm a new Stax (SR-303) owner it is OK to chime in about anything Stax even if the subject is quickly changed or do you rather see new threads started?

Also...
Since you guys were just talking about charging I have a question concerning discharging. I'm building (or maybe safe to say built but working out some hum issues) the Ciuffoli 6SL7-6BX7 amp and due to my troubleshooting I have to frequently discharge the PS oil caps and bias supply (by use of bleeder resistors) to make sure my a** is saved each time I poke in. Anyway, is there any harm to frequent (lets say 10 times in a couple hours) charges and discharges of the diaphram?

Thank You.

This thread is pretty much a free forum. There are often several different topics going on at the same time, and the thread isn't limited to only STAX products (It essentially is "The Electrostat Thread").

The effect is more subtle than we might make it seem at times, but there is definately advantages to be had from longer charging times, especially with voltage-hungry headphones like the Omega 2s.

It's based on Kevin's older all-triode (12AX7s feeding 6S4As) design that predates the venerable KGSS. It's a completely different amp, not an "older version".

There's no harm discharging them. And it sure beats discharging the capacitor on your hand instead.

Initial impressions: The bass is much "softer" and less textured than I remembered. There's an overall softness/slow pacing to the whole sound. Sounds soft in the details department.

EDIT: Parts of songs that were noticeably sibilant or etchy before now DEFINETLY aren't. Could there be something wrong with the 313 or 404? I'm using the same source and listening at the same volume level, but parts of songs that I specifically noted no longer have prominent highs and an etchy quality (Which you could say is a good thing, but I think it's responsible for the soft sound I'm hearing...).

...17 hrs to go on the SRM-T1S/SR-Lambda Sig auction... and I'm winning! Something tells me I'll be soon enjoying the Sigs, with the T1S for sale... unless this hots up closer to the end, I ain't goin any higher than $625.

I hate to say it, but it'll very likely go up during the end. I'm expecting a surge of bids (or maybe just a couple bids that'll really raise the price) near the end. I'd honestly be surprised if it goes for only ~$600 (Especially when they're NOS).

I would call that a good thing with the 404s. Have you had a cold lately by chance ? It can do strange things to your hearing. (just went through it myself)

Any thread to which you contribute is in your subscriptions list. At the bottom of the page is scrolling list. Find subscriptions, click "go", bookmark the resulting page. When you want to read this thread, click your bookmark and find all the threads you are interested in through subscriptions. You can see instantly if there are new posts and go either to the last post or the last page rather than starting at the beginning again. It is much faster than either searching for "Stax".

I hardly think a thread several years old will disappear! Actually this long thread, keeping things together, seems to work better as a reference source than mutiple short threads. Compare for instance the frustration of trying to find something on a usenet group.

Haha I don't play poker either, but I know better...

Thanks, Andre, I figured out how to subscribe (wasn't set to automatically subscribe threads I posted in).

Quick question or two: I've been through most of the thread now, and haven't found much in the way of direct comparison of 202 with 303/404 using the same driver? How much difference between the actual cans? When I auditioned the 2020 set in Akihabara, I tried the others as well, but didn't notice a huge difference with their source material (LAOX store). I got these because they were cheap (300 USD at the time) and I could run them from 12 V., so wouldn't need to correct for the 100V feed of the tube drivers in the 3030 and 4040.
(By the way, I read here that some people are using those on 120V without transforming the voltage, and wonder how their longevity is - since that's 20 per cent over voltage on critical circuits. I also notice that AV Japan sells these from EBay, but they're listed as 100V power supplies. I might be tempted to get a 4040 set if they offerred voltage conversion since their prices aren't too bad.)
I need to get back to Akihabara!!
