Back on topic, Stax is very source dependant but a good budget cdp or dac will be a good start. If the source isn't too thin sounding or bright you will be fine. You should also stick with good copper cables as cheap silver in a cheapish system is a recipe for disaster.
IT WAS YOU!!!!! ARGH!!!!!!

If you ever decide that you don't need two and need to sell one, I'll be interested

So I'm guessing Zhaolu would be a big no-no then with a STAX rig?

Gear mentioned in this thread:

J-Pak - Would a Zhaolu D2C (Maybe modded?) be a good enough source? What level of source are we talking about?

Hmm...with that Audiogon deal gone, and the BIN gone on eBay...I'm back at square one ($650 for 3030 system, or $350 for 404 and $300 left to find an amp).
Sorry I have never heard a Zhaolu. And it seems to be popular only on this forum.

jaybar has a very good price on the SR-404. I'm not sure how much the SRM-313 sells for used seperately, but I'm pretty sure it's under $400. The downside to buying the SR-404 is you would be ampless.

I love my SR-404 I haven't thought of upgrading to any other headphone other than a higher end STAX, and even then I would prefer to audition them first.

But as you can see from this thread, if you like the electrostatic sound it will get pretty addictive real fast, you shouldn't have problems reselling gear unless you're asking an absurd amount.

Not at all. I use a Zhaolu D2 with black gates and the cs 4398 as a source for my Stax rig and it sounds great!

Hang in there. Every so often a SRM-1 mk2 with a Lambda pro comes up on eBay and should be in your price range.

Happy Listening!

Can someone tell me something about this listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/STAX-SR-Lambda-P...QQcmdZViewItem

It's the Lambda Pro's, which is good, and it comes with an amplifier, whish is great. But how good is the amp (Both alone and in comparison to SRM-313, SRM-1/MK-2). Is there anything else I should know about this auction?

To clarify, if I buy the 404's I'd have $300 left to spend to get an amp. I believe a used SRM-313 would be more than that, unfortunately (I'd think it'd be something like ~$340).

Okay, I've decided that I'm just going to get Jaybar's 404's (Or maybe rontokyo's).

How bad do you think the STAX will sound with just a Sony SCD-CE595 as a source?

EDIT: Just bought rontokyo's SR-404s

Lambda Pro + SRD-X Pro.

The SRD-X is Stax's portable amp, and like other such amps (HEV70, E/90) it suffers from a bollocks power supply. I wouldn't recommend it for long term use, but it's fine if you're going camping or something.

Anyone have or know where I can get an HE60 connector? I'm desperate here!

That's still only a mild Stax obsession. Now lugging around a car battery so you can listen to your KGSS on the go, that is when you can truely call yourself obsessed.

Not a bad price (for the seller, I mean). Then again, that setup compares quite favourably with the 4030 system, which is like $750 or something in the US.

About what I paid...from a friend.

But seriously, Danny told me they were practically NIB!

I know I rushed it and paid a lot more than I should have, but I paid $360 shipped for the brand new SR-404s (Which I think is OK, considering it was only $10 more than Jaybar's and is brand new). I should be getting a bit more money on Friday, so I should be able to buy a SRM-313 in a couple days ~$340 (Or how much ever the guy charges). I'm just glad to get this whole thing sorted out. I have the SR-404s coming in from Japan and should have the money for the SRM-313 on Friday. I'm still going to be using a crappy source (CE595) so I'm not expecting to be wow'd or expecting really high quality sound (I'm expecting the STAX to be really revealing and show how crappy my source/music is, but as long as I've got headphones to listen to my music I don't really mind), but I think I should be able to live with it for 4-5 months until I invest into a good DAC.

Of course, I could spend that money on a different amp than the SRM-313. Basically any "good" amp that comes up and is less than $400

Try to find a SRM-1 mk2 with a pro bias output.

Any Staxophiles tried the Omega II out of a pro bias transformer with a decent power amp? I'm considering this combo to compare to Lambda Pros.
Oh, what's all this transformer business about? On Audiocubes a free transformer is included with any STAX amp. And I remember reading seeing a STAX amp that had a voltage switch for 100 and 110 volts (I THINK). It looks like the SRM-313 is 100 volts. Does that mean that I need some kind of transformer or something to make it 110 volts or else it won't work here (I'm not sure if the guy who is selling the SRM-313 has the transformer)?
