That list seems to be correct (whereas the Lambda Signatures I've seen were indeed brown).

The Stax that impressed me most -- more than Lambda/Signature, SR-404 and Omega II -- was the Lambda Nova Classic (if it wasn't the Nova Signature). But then again, it was an isolated audition at a show.

Count yourself lucky I'm not after one.

Of course, if you're after an SR-X mk3 Pro...

Maybe after I get an OII, but I'm waiting for the OIII so in theory I might never be looking for an SR-X

I am silently seeking an SR-Omega though (wait I'm sure all of us are)

Yes, I think that would be the same assumption.

As a relative novice to electrostatic headphones, I've been trying to determine what parameters are best for a particular headphone. Lambda Pro in ES1 is superb, but I discovered that my tube complement was restricting the voltage swing a bit. Juicing up the amp brought the HE90, and a visiting Omega II, to life, but proved to be a bit much for the Lambda Pro, which is now happier being driven by SRM-007t (sound got sloppy with the huge voltage swings the other cans demanded, and it was clearly being overdriven). I've heard the OII sound good out of 007t, but sometimes the warm-up time was unreal, and it often sounded lackadaisical. The ES1 can grab the OII by the cojones and pull out everything it has. That headphone likes its volts (and ES1 can provide a lot more than 007t).

So, if my limited experience is a guide, somewhere in the past 20 years Stax may have beefed up the voltage handling capability (and possibly needs) of their headphones. I'm refering to the audio signal, not the bias voltage. Can anyone confirm or refute this?

It's probably the lambda design more than anything, as the SR-X can take a hell of a lot of power, as can the two Omegas.

How much voltage swing does the ES-1 have, by the way?

Yay for new stuff! I got this SRM 1 mk2 from humanflyz.

It makes my (1982) Lamda Pros quite happy.

Just here to try out some electrostats (Sold my dynamic rig)

Carl - It looks like the Audiogon seller only accepts money orders and personal checks. All of my cash is in my PayPal account and I'm not sure if I could send a money order

How exactly does the original Lambda compare to the 303 and Lambda Sig? That eBay auction is becoming more and more enticing as it seems to be a good all-in-one STAX package for cheap (Compared to what my other options cost).

With the BIN option now gone (looks like someone put in a $25 bid just to get rid of it), it may very well go for more than $400. Still at $400, I don't think it's a bargain by any means. I would be absolutely sure the seller allowed you to return it if it showed up DOA.

Also have used the Sony MDR-SA5000 extensively and being very familiar with it I'll say that my STAX setup in signature is much more source dependant than the Sony ever was. The STAX will sound like crap on a poor source...and on a good source will reveal all recording flaws.

Bah, it looks like someone bought the Lambda Sigs on Audiogon

J-Pak - Would a Zhaolu D2C (Maybe modded?) be a good enough source? What level of source are we talking about?

Hmm...with that Audiogon deal gone, and the BIN gone on eBay...I'm back at square one ($650 for 3030 system, or $350 for 404 and $300 left to find an amp).

Yeah, that's the $350 (After shipping, packaging, insurance, etc.) for the SR-404 that I'm talking about. The problem is that I'd still need an amp (And I'd only have $300 left over...).

The Signatures are MINE!!! All mine!!!

Back on topic, Stax is very source dependant but a good budget cdp or dac will be a good start. If the source isn't too thin sounding or bright you will be fine. You should also stick with good copper cables as cheap silver in a cheapish system is a recipe for disaster.
