Ain't gonna happen, sorry. I want to get some custom woodies made with them, but as Larry is too busy, I'm not sure who to ask.

I'm pretty sure Stax Japan still has Alpha earpads remaining. Not sure about the arc assembly for them, but its entirely possible. As far as I know, the Alpha/SRXPro drivers are all accounted for, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

I'm looking into the SR-001 MKII System as my SR-404 replacement. I sold my old rig for a variety of reasons, but one was feigning interest. I guess it was the Head-Fi curse as I was dying to get my hands on a new piece of gear or hear a different sound (Life in the STAX world is surprisingly very slow. There are only so many different upgrade paths and most of them cost MUCHO dinero...making your Head-Fi life pretty much static).

Another reason was that I wanted more bass volume/impact. I was looking into a pair of CD3k's, but I just remembered about the SR-001 MKII system and how it could possibly kill 2 birds with 1 stone (I was going to eventually buy the UM2 for portable and CD3k/DT770 for home). What do you think of SR-404 -> SR-001 in terms of bass impact? I realize that the level of detail, air, and soundstage will diminish big time (Though I haven't heard my SR-404s in days, so I don't think it'll be that drastic), but how will the impact/thump fare? I'm still debating with myself if I should go for it and just continue saving up for a CD3000.

One problem is that the SR-001 MKII is supposed to be a rather warm electrostat. It'll be used with the H120, which means I'll eventually get a portable DAC...unfortunately when you say "portable DAC," your only option is pretty much the HeadRoom Micro DAC, which is supposedly a warm DAC. I'm afraid that the combination of warm earphones and warm source will be too brutal for me.

So, what do you guys think? Can anyone here provide me with some SR-404 -> SR-001 impressions?

The SR-001 sounds great, is cheap, and is not especially comfortable. It's far more fun and engaging than the 404, but the 404 is more accurate and articulate.

To get a portable SR-404, do you think it'd be wiser to get the ER-4P then?
Have you heard the ER-4P or know how it compares to the SR-001 in terms of sounding like the SR-404?

Well, I'm probably not the right person to ask. I hate sticking things in my ear canals with a vengance.

The ety sounds a lot more like the SR-X than the 404 and the 001/3 is a completely different beaast. I haven't heard any iem yet that is like the 404. Of the 001 or Ety, I'd say the Ety is closer. The 003 (I don't have the 001) is warmer, thicker/fuller in the lower mid section with less treble energy. It's fun and not particularly analytical like the Ety is. Both are very detailed but present in very different ways. The Ety sounds very bright and thin compared to the 003 and has much less bass energy and is pretty forward.

Hmm...how "veiled" would you say the 003 sounds coming from the SR-404? Which sounds the most like a traditional electrostat (fast, detailed yet smooth, airy, tight)?
They don't sound very veiled, just a tapering off treble with an early roll-off. The mid section is great, very fast and detailed. The bass is punchy and goes adequately deep if you get a good seal, they hit 25Hz without much trouble. They are also silky smooth, moreso than the 404 and sibilence is well handled.

They sound similar enough for there to be no need to differentiate them.

There is no veil when you get a good seal. They most certainly aren't like the HD650, with the warmth coming at the cost of reduced treble resolution. Both the 003 and 404 are very electrostatic, but with different frequency responses, and therefore character.

So, how difficult is it to get a good seal with the SR-001? I've read about people have very hard times trying to get good seals with IEMs, but the SR-001s are inserted into your ear canal a bit differently, aren't they (I was under the impression that they sit on/by your ear canal)?

They're earbuds and sit on the outside of your earcanal. I traded mine because they didn't fit, but I've never been earbud friendly.

I guess I'll give them a whirl. Thanks for the help, guys.

i really feel like a warm and soothing sound. im eqing my 501s backwards so that there is no apparent distortion and i reckon im really liking that flavour of sound now. my musical preferences have changed DRASTICALLY since i became more interested in music but with this warm sound i have found that i am enjoying coldplay more than ever.

This does not improve sq and i dont normally listen with an eq but i think i really dig this sound signature.

i keep thinking more and more that the sr001mk2 would make an exellent alternative to my current rig which almost the complete opposite. well not quite...

i think im drooling now
