Interesting point. I know people talk about the 590s as being less laid back and more agressive than than the 580/600. A little faster too. I think that's what I want. I also think that "wow factor" might be a pretty strong word for the 590s in that respect. I was wowed enough by the quality comming off a discman! I felt that it was fairly nuteral and natural while still offering kick and exitment. I have a real soft spot for electronic music and rock and most anything else with energy. But that's not to say that I would want a lot of exitement that isn't in the music, particularly at the cost of coloration, which the senns seemed to have very little of. Basicaly, I have no need to kick a dead horse or try to bleed a stone, if I don't like the music I don't listen to it. If I do like it, I want to hear how it is, not how my sound system thinks it should be. (Well, to be honest I do respect the oppinion of my new sound card.) I'm not sure what spured on this rant, so i guess I'll cut my losses and shut up about it for now.
In responce to the 580s needing an amp, I'm well aware. The 590s should bennifit too, but I don't want to feel any more compelled than nessessary to buy one right away. When I'm ready, I'll get a cable upgrade and a nice amp.

Dark,

If you're going to stay with the 590's, don't bother with the amp and the cable right off the bat. Get a really good source first, then the amp and then the cable. That's where you're going to get the most bang for the buck.

Yup, I'm pretty happy with my source, It's actually more a matter of getting better source matirial. As it is, I listen to a lot of MP3s. I have a LOT of really good records in the basement waiting to be recorded whenI get my hands on a good turn table though. Now that I'm working and have a decent job, it won't be long beofre I can buy CDs on a regular bassis, when I decide on one thing I like enough. (As it is, my broad interest in music makes the prospect of paying money for only a handful of songs from one group somewhat daunting.) Oh well, at least this card makes MP3 sound pretty good..

about break in, the software called 'Test tone generator' can generate sin function, frequency sweep, pink noise ...

if only for break in the phone, evaluation version is enough, don't need to pay $20 to register.

And about my 580, i measured resistance with multimeter, it is 290ohms. I am amazed it is so easy to drive, sound come out loud and nice, so I will buy an amp later.

MP3's? Bleh. That's for High School and College kids in state schools. Get yourself a CD player and don't get a $100 player either. Spend some money and get a GOOD player. Spend a grand to fifteen hundred. Then, get a set of 580s, a good amp. Burn CDs from friends if you have to, but don't do the MP3 thing.

Guess what... Yup that's right, I'm right smack between high school and community college and I don't have $2500 to lay down on audio gear. If I did that would be great, I'd already have done my dental work and I'd be driving a better car and so on and so fourth. But getting back to reality, If I can get high(er) quality audio onto my hard drive I'm perfectly happy with my Terratec DMX 6-Fire in terms of output. It really beat the crap out of my sound blaster and it opened the sound right up. I no longer roll my eyes when I stop to analyze what I'm hearing.
At least I'm on the road to audio nirvana, even if I'm still just a bare-foot hitch-hiker.

I guess since you're a kid in a state school, I'll have to cut you some slack, but just this once! You're on the right track though. This is the logical progression for you:

590s and MP3s while in school

580's and DIY amp upon graduation

$1500 CD player upon getting your first job

CDs during your employment

Headroom Max amp upon getting fired from your first job

Various mods when you get your other job

Orpheus BEFORE you get married

All audiophile expenditure stops upon marriage.

Well that seems pretty reasonable in most points. Though, from what I hear about the difference between the 580/600 and 590 I think I wouldn't get a 580/600 if I already had the 590. I think the 590 will suite my tastes better based on what I've heard about it. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to spend $1500 on a CD player, DVD audio will be popular...
Next up, I have a job and I'm not in college yet, I'm taking a year off, since I don't know what I want to major in. However, I need to save money for plenty of ither things that aren't audio equipment... Which sucks, but that's life.

And I do't think I'd marry someone who doesn't understand one of the few things I'd be likely to spend real money on. (Of course, at this rate, by the time I find my ideal woman Hell will have gone through its second iceage.)

that seems like a reasonable progression. More reasonable than getting 580s when you have 590s at any rate.
Unfortuneatly, the only girl to ever show interest in me seemed to fit the mother role but none of the other characteristics mentioned.

Wow.. talk about thread hi-jacking, I feel like some sort of militant hobo. (which means it's bed time again.)

I say get a CMOY amp and a Denon DCM-370 or similar CDP to start and work your way up from there.
