Grado RS2

Very nice review, thx

Is anyone who tried this LD2+ with Grado RS or SR lines. If this little amp. not that bright as his brother than I guess it may be making a very good company with RS2 or SR225 as well.

Sounds like it will, but very strange that only Sennheiser and Sony been mentioned. Well I see MS2, but no Grado at all...

If you would "scale down" your photos some, it would be possible to actually read your review, without scrolling every line.

Just a suggestion.

I've only had it a few days, but I think it mates very well with the SR225.

I got my tracking number on the 10th as well. I emailed David previously about the tracking number and he said that they have EMS pickups, and they get the tracking numbers from the previous pickups when the next pickup comes, which can be a few days apparently.

Mine hasn’t arrived yet, but it got through customs today in San Francisco, and I only live about 30 miles from SF. The regular mail already came today, do express mail packages come with the regular mail or on a separate truck?

Mine came with the truck cause it was too big and heavy for regular mail

I’ve had my Little Dot II+ amp for just over a week now so I guess it is time to post some impressions. I realize that in time my assessment of the amp might change in time, but for now these are my observations...

I bought the amp to serve primarily as a pre-amp and I can confirm that it performs this function as advertised. Still, I’m not completely satisfied. For some reason when the pre-amp RCAs and headphones are connected to the amp at the same time the sound in the headphones becomes slightly distorted (it is particularly noticeable with my Grados). Once the RCA cable is disconnected the headphones function normally. The amp also gets pretty hot, after it’s been on for a while it is difficult to touch it for more than 3-4 seconds. I have no complaints about the build quality - the amp has a very sturdy feel to it and is quite heavy for its size.

As far as the tonal balance is concerned I find LDII+ to be a little on the bass-heavy side. I wouldn’t say that the bass overwhelms other frequencies, it’s just that it is plentiful and not particularly tight. This low-frequency emphasis makes the amp an excellent match for my Grados (SR225) – for my Senns (HD580) which are plenty bass heavy on their own I prefer my M^3 with STEPS by some margin. It is possible to detect a touch of harshness (grain?) in the way LDII+ reproduces the mids.

Someone (I think it was tbonner1) claimed that LDII+ outperforms an M^3 amp and, considering my experience with these two amps, I would have to disagree. LDII+ is as excellent value for the price however, IMO, M^3 is more detailed, sounds significantly clearer, has better, tighter bass with more impact. Personally, in terms of overall performance, I would put these two amps in different leagues altogether - M^3 sounds much more natural and is simply a better amp, although at about 1/3 of the price of M^3 with STEPS LDII+ is still an exceptional value for sure.

The amp has an excellent synergy with Grados - I can confirm that, since there were some questions about it. Although I have not heard any of the amps that are usually recommended for Grados, I’ve found LDII+ to be a better match for Grados than any of my amps (including the M^3, regardless of the opamp configuration) - plenty of bass (I never thought that my SR225s were capable of this kind of bass) and no harshness or sibilance in the higher frequencies.

Overall I am not disappointed with Little Dot II+ but I am not overwhelmed either. It is a very competent amp at an excellent price, but hardly a giant killer of any kind.

I assume you have it hooked up to an amp and speakers? Have you had a chance to play it at all loud? I’m just wondering if playing bass-heavy music using speakers is going to cause issues with microphonics.

My thoughts exactly. I would say that the LDII+ is in the same league as the Gilmore Lite, just a slightly different "flavor".

I would absolutely love to see some kind of ABX testing with these amps, I would love to see if even seasoned audiophiles could tell which was which near 100% of the time.

Yes, I've been using it with a Marantz 2238 Amp (used as a power amp) to drive Paradigm Mini monitors. I've had no issues with microphonics or any kind of noise for that matter.

Seperate truck and I went through the same thing with the tracking numbers. I want to know why mail gets to the East Coast so fast.

Yeah its funny, I live in Anchorage and have one of the busiest airports in the world, I have heard that almost every package for the US that comes from Asia stops here first, but mine actually went to San Fran then up to here, doh.

It took me 9 or 10 days to recieve my amp

I got it in 5 days, and I live twice as far as you. It should be reversed if you look at it logically. Just doesn't make sense...
