help: What could be blocking my ports?

I've got to open port 65505 to allow a certain software to run. I've disabled all firewalls I know of (only the XP one) and disconnected my router and ran my computer straight to the modem. My computer is running XP pro SP2

Is there anything I'm missing? What could possibly be blocking my ports?

Try a fresh install on another pc just to check if the software will work under thsoe conditions hooekd straight into the modem.

I would say port forwarding but you disconnected your computer to the router so...

If you've already set up port-forwarding on your modem then I can't really think what else there is ...

What exactly is port 65505 for? If its for [insert illegitimacy here] then it may be your ISP blocking it. My ISP goes as far as to block port 25 (SMTP) in hope that I'll use their email instead of spending 10 seconds to find an alternate port .

EDIT: Have you visited PortForward.com? 'Suppose you might be able to get some help on the forums.

He brings up an very valid point, if directly to the modem you have no sucess or on an computer with a fresh install straight to the modem, your ISP is probably blocking the port.

if your certain software can't be changed to another port, then use another client for the protocol that can use another port. comets, tornados and ยต come to mind.

Port 21 is FTP. Port 25 is SMTP.

Try that guy's scan. It sounds like your situation is either user error, or you have a malicious program acting up. Are you running an updated virus scanner and/or decent spyware utility?

I just got an idea which may determine if it's an software issue or not.

Try: http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

Get some prepackaged Linux ditsro like ubuntu or something and see if the port works or not.

I might add your software might not run in Linxu, but in Windows if you do a port scan and the port isn't open, try in Linux.

You want him to install Linux? I have a feeling there are easier ways to troubleshoot this problem...

No, vmware will run a session within windows, and it is free / no installation is required except the one for vmware. It's like a free sandbox more or less.
