Headphone Triumph To Tragedy: I Need Your Help and Advice Please

Hello again,

I hadnt ever expected to author a tragic headphone related post, but I have some unfortunate news of things that recently happened, and could truly use your advice, suggestions, and collected wisdom, as I am at a loss as to what to do.
After having spent a fair bit of time as a member here, and enjoying the community, and the knowledge that all of you so willingly share, I packed up my much appreciated Corda HA-1 and sent it off to Kurt W to be upgraded to Blue status. I decided that I could somehow survive the loss of being unable to listen to headphones (my Beyer DT-931's) for two weeks given the excellent reviews that the upgrade has received across the board here.
I shipped out the amp via two day, Fed Ex, and Kurt received it as scheduled. After everything was finished on his end, I was all set and waiting for the first ever, triple buffered, Corda Blue. Kurt is a great guy, who is such a pleasure to deal with, and I couldnt wait to get the package and plug it in for hours of listening.
Then, something extremely unfortunate struck. Kurt sent it to me via USPS "Priority Mail" which provides a two, sometimes three day delivery. By now you might have guessed it. That was eight days ago, and the package is lost. The Post Office told Kurt that it is possible for it to take up to nine days, but my neighbor works at the main Post Office for my metropolitan area, and he says its toast. In fact, he said that on Monday night.
Kurt did insure it, as promised, but the truly upsetting part is that my amp, and all his work are gone, and the money would cover the costs, but wont get me them back. Not to mention that taking a week to ten days to send payment to Jan Meier in Europe, for another one, then getting it another ten days or so later, sending it out to Kurt again (assuming he still had time and would even do it). Add in the time the upgrade and return shipping to me. Thats simply not going to work, its just a disaster from my perspective. There isnt any way that I could go up to another four or five weeks "minimum" without headphones. Not to mention there is a 21 day waiting period before the Post Office will pay the claim, and they dont even start the clock until Friday. Add it all up, and best case, I "might" have a new, upgraded amp by New Years!
I've been working a LOT of hours, under a LOT of stress, and a couple of hours of headphone listening is the only means I've found to effectively wind down before finally getting some sleep. So much for that.
And I dont even know what options I would have, aside from the overpriced Headroom stuff, there arent many quality headphone amplifiers readily purchaseable, especially given that I would have only a $600.00 budget, and on top of that, I need a 120 ohm connection for the 931's, which virtually nothing has.
I'm just thoroughly disgusted with the USPS and it infuriates me even more that the damned government employees whose salaries we pay are responsible.
I'm just very upset about all of this, And I dont even know where to go from here. There are essentially no good options that I can think of. And I'm left to continue without any means to even listen to my headphones for the forseeable future.
Any advice or suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. The "only" possibility that I've even been able to come up with would be to possibly purchase the new Corda Pre-head 1 (about a MONTH from now when the USPS pays off) but I dont think its actually even available yet, and we still havent seen any reviews of it. I "thought" it was about $650.00, but, much as I trust Jan Meier, I dont feel I could order one as my only headphone amp without any input from some of the experts here concerning its actual quality and sound.
Things feel pretty bleak at the moment, in terms of options. This was just a disastrous way for things to go.

Now I know why this fscking USPS mail service is especially craptastic in the Midwest...

Nightfall
That really sucks but it may still show up--if not at your place then perhaps returned to Kurt because an address smudged or a delivery guy was a little sauced that day.

I'll have a review of the Prehead coming, but not immediately. It's one option I'd consider, anyway, if you were planning to get the Blue. They have a bit in common under the hood.

Don't sweat the 120ohm jack. Jan stocks 120ohm adapters and I'm sure he'll be happy to sell you one even if you plan to use it with an amp he didn't design.

It once took 3+ weeks for a cable to arrive on my doorstep...from CT. Ya never know, it may show up.

Sorry to hear about your badluck with the USPS. I find that all delivery companies have their bad days and good days. I have purchased some items through UPS and Fedex that came to me completely flattened or shredded to ribbons. One of my friends literally received from UPS the address label that was pasted to the side of his disappeared package.

Hope this helps all of ya ;)

Nightfall,

One month ago I represented all that is noob. Fortunately, I now posess the Senn 580 and an Altoid amp. Cables on the way and I've got my eyes peeled for a legendary pdcp. I can now firmly state that 580/Altoid/(insert music here) is to "relax" as late hour bike treks in the cool, dark mountains of Arizona is to "rush."

That said, life without headphones must surely suck man!

On a recent trip to the doc's office he taught me a quick way to enter into alpha state. The "relaxed/rush" state that helps to calm you down, clear your head, and get you ready to bust some... Anyway, hope this helps!

When ~ Every morning after tooth-brushage for 15 minutes in the same comfy corner.

1. Find a nice chair or other surface to sit upright in. Sit up straight and try to relax your shoulders as much as possible. Rest your forearms on your thights comfortably and clasp your hands together.

2. Criss cross your fingers and thumb like your going to pray. Touch your index fingers like your pointing forward and put your thumbs together pointing up. *listening to Pavarotti, unable to type*

*back*

3. Now focus your eyes on the tip of your nose. (this will feel uncomfortable at first)

4. Concentrate on the tip of your nose, taking slow, deep breaths. (mouth, nose, mouth and nose...I use them all)

5. After about a minute, your eyes will be going nuts. Mine did. Keep focusing on the tip of your nose, continue to breath slowly, and gently shut your eyes while still focusing on the tip of your nose.

I set a timer for 15 minutes. When the buzzer goes buzz, stretch a little in the chair so you don't get a head rush, hehe. Though others will prolly get a kick outa the forehead/floor phenomena

.............tooooo many adjectives to describe the wonderful feelings after your 15 minute checkout.............

And hey, when you get your cans back you can combine the two for a sublime "sitting."

Nightfall, after reading your post the thought that came to mind was "SNAP OUT OF IT". It's only a headphone amp. There are many people in this world with REAL problems. Count your blessings. Enjoy the sunrise, and the sunset. The beautiful colors of Autumn. Buy yourself some MX500s and enjoy some music without an amp. And when you get your insurance check, order another amp. Who knows, this might be like one of those stories we occasionally hear on the news about the USPS delivering the letter 50 years after it was sent.

Re: Headphone Triumph To Tragedy: I Need Your Help and Advice Please

Yeah, I notice headphone listening is by far my second best way to relax and unwind anymore. I often use it to wind down before I go to sleep too.

Maybe get yourself some V6s, HD497s, or Grado SR60s to pull you through without an amp? That's the best I've got and I'm pretty happy with it. I know I am crushed when my computer or audio stuff goes amiss. It's the nature of a hobby, you're a little crazy about it.

Good luck.

having lost many parcels through USPS, when i do use USPS, i ALWAYS send it certified. then at least there's a track / log record of where it went. if it's too important, i then use UPS. but the problem with UPS is that if you're not there on the first delivery attempt, things tend to get smashed or lost.

as to the insurance - be prepared for hell. they'll want to see reciepts, 'and can you prove that this is the one that was mailed?'

i no longer belong to cd music clubs because packages tend to come with a few cd's missing. nothing like a nice label on the box advertising the contents. and the hassels just are not worth it.

Delivery Confirmation

I always purchase Delivery Confirmation with Priority Mail packages. It cost $0.45 extra and you can lookup your package online. It is similar to the UPS Ground Track number. Note that this service does not replace insurance if the package is lost or stolen. I have never had a problem with either sending or receiving Priority Mail packages with Delivery Confirmation.

Well... you might want to buy a pair of etys ER-4P with P->S adapter. Either the P or the S sounds excellent out of anything, so they will tide you over until you get a new amp... and you get new phones to boot

Darkclouds,

Thanks for the extremely kind offer, its very much appreciated. Kurt W has already extended me the same offer while we work out things with the USPS and I will likely take him up on it. Again, thank you.
