Roll in the Mullard CV4003/ 4004, EI EL84s or for a lusher warmer sound try the JJ EL84..

Its a direct drop in for the 12AX7 slot.

Or perhaps u could try ECC83 if u have cash burning a hole in your pocket

i dont forsee any problems...

( ps i the CV4004/CV4003/RCA-5751s/Westinghouse-5751s ), and i think the RCA-5751s give the most bang for the buck! )

I managed a brief listening session again yesterday with the DT880. The harshness around the sibilance region was gone. I guess that was an artifact of being new out-of-box. The amp now has about 24 hours on it. The pairing with the DT880 was amazing overall. I wasn't even able to listen critically - every time I even try to, it just makes me want to stop and listen to the music.

So far the least impressive results have been with the HD600, the change isn't as dramatic as with the other two headphones.

Asr I'm looking forward to hearing this amp when you come to Houston Maybe we can pair it up with my D-500 and compare some sources.

Use Ultralinear to drive speakers on HA-1A, but for headphone listening I strongly recommend Triode mode.
in a (rather technical) nutshell, arranged in terms of -

sheer linearity of amplifying curve -
1. ultralinear
2. pentode
3. triode

even order harmonics -
1. triode
2. pentode
3. ultralinear

odd order harmonics -
1. pentode
2. ultralinear
3. triode

high order harmonics -
1. ultralinear
2. pentode
3. triode

sheer linearity of amplifying curve -
1. ultralinear
2. pentode
3. triode
>> Won't get more linear than SS stuff anyway

even order harmonics -
1. triode
2. pentode
3. ultralinear
>> Probably gives a warmer, fuzzier sound

odd order harmonics -
1. pentode
2. ultralinear
3. triode
>> Probabbly gives a colder, sharper sound

high order harmonics -
1. ultralinear
2. pentode
3. triode
>> This stuff is pretty detrimental to timbre
