Hi, Lou, I am really glad that you are happy with your purchase. I have to admit, I was a little nervous when you said that you wanted to put the excitement back into your music, as I find this a very neutral and transparent headphone. I was going to suggest that you just plain listen to more exciting music (I would think that Led Zeppelin qualifies as "exciting music"). But by then it was too late, and you had already ordered it, so I was going to just wait and see how you felt about them by yourself, without trying to influence what you heard. I am glad everything worked out.

PS I read your post last night, but did not log in. In honour of that, I brought my pair to work and am listening to them now. (Taking a break and reading my head-fi.)

Ablaze,

yeah I figured I'd get a good pair of cans like these to bide my time till I can afford a decent amp.

but for now, I'll probably be living unamped for a while.

what dya think? these or the Sony CD3000s? I heard they're pretty astounding unamped too?

I have many excellent portable MD and CD players. A100Ti + headphone out of Sony D-E905 or Sharp MD-SS323 yields excellent results (90% of the Fixup Mini). I can easily live with the A100Ti unamped. Remember that the D-E905 is very well regard as a legendary Discman and my Sharp MD-SS323 sounds even better.

According to Hirsch, CD3000 is a higher quality headphone and comparable to the W2002. It is very amp and source dependent.

thanx for the update LTUCCI1924, appreciate it. greatly considering these phones now. this also hypes me up more for the A1000 and the W1000. wonder how the 100Ti will stack up against them..

thats why i'm tempted to get them sometime soon rather than later. also why i'm eager to hear some reviews once the A1000 and the W1000 releases.

Lou,

You compared the HD580s as a motionless cow, with the ATs being race-horses... With my setup, if the HD580s (or for that matter ANY headphone) had any MORE energy, it'd be to the point of distraction...

Could you please clarify if you meant ENERGY / PACE that is super-charged with the ATs??

I have a feeling that the 300ohm load of the HD580s might've been playing tricks on your META though... as great as the METAs are, now that I have my X-Can V2 in full use again, and the Cardas cable (btw... Thanks Lou for the continual advisory to get an aftermarket cable... its a world of difference!) The HD580s are in a truly different league...

My Sonys still sound real good out of my META though...

Why is it when someone doesn't like the sound of the 580/600's it has to be something else causing the problem. Can't people just accept that they are not for everyone?

I mean come on, Lou has had his for awhile now and tried different things with them but ultimately found they weren't for him. I can relate, I found Lou's description of his displeasure quite accurate with my own.

Originally I got the impression a Cmoy would be a fine combination (which I think it is) but as soon as I voiced my concerns with the 580's people said I needed a better amp, upgrade the cables, etc. One of the amps that was suggested was a Meta42 which now is the possible culprit for Lou not liking his???

For what it's worth I think the 580's do some things really well and if I had the means I would have kept them myself and got something else to go along with them and try some upgrades but my financial situation doesn't allow for that. I don't deny the fact that all these upgrades will probably make the 580's sound even better, but ultimately at what cost? And as for myself, an educated guess tells me I don't think they would "do" it for me even then.

I think people have to realize that maybe the 580/600's aren't for everyone and stop trying to make excuses for them.

Just my two cents worth, and we all know I'm Canadian so my two cents ain't worth jack ****!

Elnero...

If you read my post more carefully, you'd see that i'm simply asking Lou WHAT is BETTER about his new 'phones ~ using his own analogy for reference, saying that IMO anything more forward than the HD580 in MY system I think would be overkill...

Which I think you'll see here... NO senn / AT bashing from me...

Then, I simply reffered that I am not happy with the sound of the HD580 through MY META (not meaning that the AMP is bad, but that there isn't much SYNERGY)... that isn't citing that its a bad choice for everyone... but a bad choice for me... and was questioning... not stating that the problem could've been the same with Lou...

Lou...

Hopefully the next time I meet up with Bangraman, i'll hear some high end AT 'phones... I'll be sure to let you know my opinion

This to me sounds like your implying the Meta42 doesn't work well with the 580's, which is contrary to what people were telling me.

It just seems like everytime somebody voices displeasure with the 580's it's not the phones but something else.

I only have a basic 9v META, which has been 'tuned' for 32 ohm headphones... THAT is why I myself have problems with it... you missed the very final line in that post elnero... saying that my sony headphones still sound really good through the META...

I don't know if you was a regular visitor before you 'joined' here, but if you were, then you'll know that I really haven't liked the HD580s for quite a while... i've tried, and then failed... over and over... until now... I have my new CD player, my new cable... and the synergy is really there now... I've had to question myself several times over the past few days... but it really is so... i'm really liking the HD580s now

I'm not saying the HD580s are great, I know there is better out there, and I have not once said that Lou's choice is bad... all I would like is a comparison, as I find it hard to understand... myself, with MY idea of what Lou means how anyone could want any more forcefullness than what my HD580s are giving me now... but, if thats due to MY system synergy so be it
