A wise person would at least wait until they have the item in their possession and are sure they work.

That would be renging on a contract. It could subject the seller to legal sanctions. The seller is both legally and ethically bound to complete the sale. I have no doubt that there are sellers that would try to weasel out of the sale when they found they had priced the item incorrectly, or would try and represent a damaged item as good. But yes, I would blame them if they tried either on me, and take any actions I deemed necessary to correct the situation.
I've only had one experience that I'd rate as truly negative in around 600 eBay transactions. Most sellers do take a contract seriously (at least the ones I've dealt with).
I really don't see the humor in taking a contract seriously. It's those who don't that make buying and selling that much harder for the rest of us.
