Singlowerpower and K701 owners

For those of you with Singlepower amps and K701 headphones, I have a question regarding the sound signature of certain tubes.

I am currently thinking about sending my PPX3 back to Mikhail so I can use output tubes with more current output, because I feel the 6CG7s, which I'm currently using, is not giving me enough. So far I'm deciding between the 5687s, the 6BL7, and the 6BX7s. I know that in order to use the 6BL7/6BX7, I would have to first install a MPX transformer in my PPX3.

So for those Singlepower owners who have used the tubes I've mentioned as output tubes, I want to know what you think their sound signatures are, so I can make a decision. Thanks.

Firstly, what other options (if any do you have on your amp) or are you considering. That said going on to your question. To my ears the 6BL7GT is a more powerful version of the 6sn7, analogy wise. That being said it has the airiness and sounstage of the 6sn7, while being able to provide a large amount of current able to drive low impedence headphones. It is worthy of note that to me, the 6BL7GT has a comparable amount of bass to the 5687, yet the 6BL7GT's bass is a bit bloomier (but still very tight). IMO a possible reason for that is the larger soundstage. That being said the 5687 also puts out alot of power, the soundstage is smaller (think something like a jazz club vs. a concert hall), that has slightly tighter bass (less resonance effects as well). To me the BX7GT is a cleaner/more neutral version of the BL7GT, which is warmer. With the BX7GT, in my mind the driver/gain tube is key here.

That being said addressing your amp, personally I'd get octal sockets (and use adapters if you want to use 5687s).

I think alot of which route you go has to deal with what music you lsiten to, for something like rock or metal, then the 5687s would be more suitable, but for something like classical the 6BL7GTs work better.

As for other options, I'm considering getting the 12v option, and if I end up getting the 6BL7/6BX7, then I will also be getting the MPX transformer. As for driver tubes, I'm thinking of using a 12SN7.

That sounds just fine.
