clix wont charge unless plugged in to an XP machine???

Has anybody else had this occur? I took my clix with me on a short trip (without my pc) and tried using one of those generic usb ac adapters.

When I connect it it says USB connected, but the charging animation did not come on. Whats worse is that the display stays on and apparently if left plugged in overnight, drains the battery! Needless to say I was not happy.

I tried with the Apple ipod adapter and got the same results, but as soon as I connect it to my PC it charges.

So is by design or do I have a bad clix?

I believe it is by design. And I believe it has something to do with UMS compliance. There was a discussion somewhere on the web about this. It might have been at Misticriver, DAP Review, Geek or Anything But iPod.

Hopefully, they'll release a new firmware that bypasses this.

I am not certain that they will because, IIRC, a choice had to be made about UMS, and that meant that the unit could not be charged other than through a connection on a machine using Win XP. I too am hoping for a fix, but it seems like this design was deliberate.

I didn't realize this. So even though you only want to recharge the Clix, but not download or synce to it, you can't if the PC's not an XP machine?? That's taking proprietorship a little too far, IMO....

I may have been a little confused about UMS and MTP. I suggest that you look at the postings by David McLauchlan near the middle to end of the page (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archi...lix-review.php). This may explain more about the design of the Clix.

I've ran into this with my Clix also. What I found is that if the battery was drained all the way and you plugged it into something other than a computer, it would charge. It's a rather bizarre problem, and a bit of an inconvenience, but there is a workaround.

So are you saying that if the battery is completely drained, then it will charge from A Usb adapter?

If that's true, to me that's no work around, but just stupid design. It also means no options like car chargers and the like either.

Dont get me wrong, I am liking my clix except for this problem but since I travel so much, it may be a deal breaker for me

I do not travel that much with mine, but I agree with you about the need to recharge while on the road. I hope they can offer some solution in the near future.

Times like these, you need to gather a bunch of people and start sending in the emails.

The inability to charge my Clix, except when the battery is dead, off of anything but a Windows XP machine did end up bothering me a lot more than I thought it would. I found the battery life to be barely half of what the rated time is and combined with the charging issues it overshadowed all the great features the Clix has. What good is a great DAP when you can't use it because the battery is dead? So it's going back to Best Buy. It truly is a great player that is crippled by idiotic charging requirements.

I ended up getting a Creative Zen MicroPhoto on Sunday to replace the Clix. The MicroPhoto happily charges off of any mini-USB charger or connection I've tried with it. It had no issues charging fully off of my iBook on Sunday, and I was even able to load some music onto it from my iBook thanks to XNJB. Sure it has a slightly flaky touchpad and not as many features as the Clix, but overall it works well and I have some convenient options to keep it charged.
