Which Black Sabbath albums to get? - Page 3

Bought Heaven & Hell's The Devil You Know. It is not bad but not as good as some of Dio's better works. The 1st half of the CD features slow-medium tempo songs with Bible Black being my current favourite. The second half of the disc has the harder rocking songs.

My initial impression is there aren't alot of memorable riffs or solos - the songs and riffs are ok, but not the type that hooks you immediately like say anything on the Paranoid album or songs like Symptoms of the Universe of Dio era Sabbath stuff like Heaven and Hell or Neon Knights. It isn't bad, just not memorable. Doesn't measure up to the 1st Dio era Sabbath tunes in my opinion and not as "pop" as Holy Diver either. Still worth a listen as it does sound old school and that's a rarity these days.

I would rate the first 4 Sabbath albums as essential ... don't own any of the Dio era albums though I do have The Dio Years compilation which is an excellent set I highly recommend.

Fuse speaks the truth. Those seven albums are indispensable. And if you're really a fan, you'll find yourself craving more. The other Dio-lead albums are pretty good, as well as his work with Rainbow. But if you want that particular sound that Sab pioneered in the early 70s, you'll need to go elsewhere, like Pentagram, Jersusalem, Witchfinder General, and other great bands inspired by Sabbath.

I wrote about that recently, focusing on current bands based largely in Sweden: Stoner Rock Primer. Just saw Graveyard last week, who were amazing. Looking forward to seeing Heaven & Hell next week!

Just another fan poking in with another take. I am personally an Iommi fan, not an Ozzie fan, and that general pioneering style that was present in Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Master of Reality started to evolve/lose it's appeal to me by Vol. 4. As it stands, I can only recommend 3.5 albums.

I'm also in the camp that Rainbow is the better Dio band. Blackmore was a more endearing guitarist.

I only listen to Dio's Holy Diver, as for Rainbow, only the first 2 albums, i.e. Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Rainbow Raising. As fuseboxx remarked earlier, Rainbow is more classic rock / hard rock and Dio are more metal.

For me, Holy Diver has that unique 1980s metal sound - it is abit cheesy but in a fun Dio kind of way. Mind you, I really like Rainbow's 1st two albums as well. Have never been able to get any of Ronnie James Dio's earlier stuff with Elf and remain curious what they sound like.

I'll throw in for Mob Rules and Born Again as well, and possibly some of the Tony Martin albums as well.
