Help with Asian Culture... ???

So, this weekend I had dinner at my aunts house. One of the things I enjoy is japanese soy sauce (thicker & sweeter than Chinese) on rice.

2 of my aunts flipped out... Like I had committed the most evil of sins They were all grossed out watching me eat..? Note that this dinner wasn't a special or formal occasion, just day - to day eating.

Whats up with that? Is it that big of a deal... around the world?

Forgive me I am ABC, and am not very well veresed in most traditional Asian culture. Heck, my grandparents are ABC.

Yeah, putting soy sauce on rice is considered quite bad form in Japan as well.

Koreans children will do it - rice with soy sauce and butter.

I dunno, when I see my American friends doing it, I kind of cringe (if it's at a good place). To me it's akin to... I dunno putting mayonnaise on pizza.

Soy sauce on rice? That's for round-eyes, we don't roll like that in asia. You're a shame unto your people.

I put soy sauce & a little Chinese mustard on my white rice, and enjoy it very much thank you Rice by itself is just too plain IMO.

I enjoy Japanese soya sauce. I like it with dim sum's the best, I particularly like the brand kikkoman I think it's called.

My old man would freak if I sat down and had a chinese meal and stuck Japanese soya sauce on my food but I never liked the old git anyways so it doesn;t matter

I think I know why your Grandparents freaked as it maybe the same reason the old git freaks when I do the same.

I know people who eat just rice. The old folks especially, since back in some of the old countries, it was pretty much all they could afford to eat. I personally can't eat rice without meat or soup.

Hailed back from the days of WWII, soy sauce on plain rice is a sign of poverty. That's why some old folks have a dislike for that.

i think it just sounds a little gross. soy sauce is a condiment, and rice is the tasteless staple of asian food. It is akin to spreading ketchup on your bread, or sprinkling salt onto cereal. The point of the other dishes is to complement the bland taste of rice. Soy sauce is the equivalent of salt, and should really not be eaten plain with rice, because, well, it's really really unhealthy!

well I still doubt that even THEY would put soy sauce on the rice in order to "salten" the rice

The reason they freak out for putting soy sauce onto your rice is because its "bad" since for se if you were in an Asian country the food there is pretty plain/basic tasting and not that much "favor" in it as it would be in the United States.

Why do you doubt it? Are you asian, and aren't used to seeing it done?

When I was a kid (asian, but american born), it was normal to see people eat rice with soy sauce. I did it, not that bad when you're starving.

"Real" asian food is definitely not plain/basic tasting. Often times it's more flavorful than american cuisine. (I may've interpreted your post wrong, if so correct me, kinda hard to understand what you're saying)
