Interconnect Corrosion

Has anyone had this happen on a long term connection? I was just wondering about the time frame something like this could happen, and how often since many manufacturers proclaim the corrosion resistive ability of their interconnect. In other words is gold plating or otherwise special coatings really necessary?

My dad gave me a few custom made ones from the 70s', the cables were fine but the outside of the connectors were slightly corroded, the contact parts look fine though, and there was no degradation in sound quality.

I'm thinking that putting a little dialectric grease on any connections and then covering that up should pretty much negate any issues with corrosion. Anyone have any comments on covering connections with dialectric grease?

imo I don't think that is really necs... and dieelctric grease should stay in the garage, and on the spark wire boots of my car... I have only had a problem with a pair of throw away IC's that came with a sony cd player I bought years ago. I have had a pari of Monster MKII 400 for about 5 years now and they look like the day I bought them....

Worse comes to worse, just replace the IC if the end corrodes, imo that may mean that the connector is at the end of it's life.

Well, as long as I have a tight connection I don't think I'll worry about it (though the dielectric grease is making me wonder).

Isn't gold supposed not to corrode?

Also, they always claim 24K gold. But it's pure gold as soft as putty?

"Gold plated" not solid....I couldn't imagine what a set of Ic's with solid 24K gold ends would cost and your right gold shouldn't tarnish...The higher the gold content the softer the piece would be...10K being the strongest and 24K being the most fragile.

Ah... that makes more sense to me now. Hope the plating won't come off each time I connect/disconnect the cables.

A good habit to get into is to clean your connections. Radio Shack sells Deoxit/ProGold which is the preferred way of cleaning and preserving electrical contacts.

I used it to clean the contacts of my high end flashlights and the output really did noticeably get brighter.
