Yes, I know how headphones work. I do use ported IEMs on my commute, because again, I don't want to be a jerk and spill my music all over the place. I also don't have the bag space to be hauling my HD-650s and an amp around with me. But, even if you think it's not possible, I definitely enjoy the greater amount of outside noise that comes in through them. You enjoy music your way, I'll enjoy it mine.

I'm in Toronto and it's mostly Beats and various Sony models, including the ridiculous looking XB series. But I also see M50s and M-80s quite a bit. Not many M-100s.

On the subject of the HD650, there's nothing wrong with having an LCD-2 or even a K1000 portable setup. It's been done before. Many people have quiet places that they travel to throughout the day with relative privacy and the ability to enjoy those headphones. The principle of having a high-end portable setup has its merits.

However, the situation described with the HD650 makes little sense on its own. It's been awhile since I've been in Montreal so I can't recall what the subways were like, but generally subways are pretty loud and have the ability to negate any sonic benefits of a high-end headphone if it doesn't isolate well (similar to being on an airplane). Some open cans can actually handle this without bringing much ambient noise into play and without leaking too much either (low-end Grados are an example), but the HD650 definitely has way too much leak both ways to be viable for the subway.

The only reasonable explanation I can see for this is if the person wearing the headphones was simply taking them to work or somewhere that they have a quiter room and better source equipment, and that they had no other music option at the time but their HD650s that they intend to use at the office.

No new sightings, but a TA at my school recognized my re-400's. Flattered to say the least haha

I live in Montreal, and it's not uncommon to see more expensive headphones. Best I've seen in the subway was HD650's and ED8's (not counting me when I owned them)

Strange.
I know I myself have used HD800s and LCD2s around the city but never saw any ED8s or hd650

Making other people think you've got a head-fi acount?

I saw some B&W p3s in blue, some hp headphones, a load of earphones which I couldn't see what they were apart from one which looked promising because of the sennheiser logo volume adjuster, but I wasn't sure which they were because the girls hair covered them, camo bob marleys, bob marley in ears.

Fact of the day:

In the world there are approximately:

1.5% gingers (105 million)

0.15% Millionaires (10 million)

0.0043% Head-fiers (300 thousand)

And 5% of people have red hair. My favorite type of girlwink.gif

you mean like, auburn/darker red as opposed to carrot ginger?

That's why it's so incredibly strange to run into one at random. Most people with Head-Fi accounts own very little actual high-end gear, and there's only a small subset of Head-Fi that actively parades their gear or knowledge around in public.

Wat...

With those numbers, does that mean I'm more likely to come across a millionaire in public than a Head-Fier? Actually.....I did see Bill Gates before while waiting in line for some Dick's hamburgers in Seattle. blink.gif

A while ago I realized completely by accident that someone I know (a girl, too) had a Head-Fi account! Like, what are the chances of that blink.gif

Multiple Apple earbuds and Skullcandy. That's how they roll in East TN. confused_face.gif

When I was in NYC last summer I saw a girl who was wearing Grado SR80i.  Man I would love to see more variety like that.

Saw 2 persons wearing HDJ-500 in my university yesterday. And one wearing ATH-M50. I'm sporting an UM1 smily_headphones1.gif

Get on that mate. I really wish my girl was into my hobby, but at least she doesn't mind me spending money on it wink.gif

Oh god, I feel for you. My girlfriend refuses to use any earphone costs more than 20 euros, she doesn't let me buy a nice pair of iems for her because she thinks that's so expensive and she doesn't need it, she is not interested in the sound that much. Well, I can also say, she doesn't mind me spending money on it either, she still thinks 1k euros for a ciem is not normal but when she sees me listening to music and losing myself she understands a bit (I guess, hope).
