Headphone Sightings 2 - Page 690

Not really a headphone sighting, but someone audiophile thing. Our videography class had a discussion about digital vs Vinyl. Some students argued that the digital files cannot sound as good as vinyl. Now, I know that good vinyl sounds really warm and nice, but no where as good as 24/192 flac. It was just interesting how some people think.

What do you guys think? Good quality vinyl vs 24/192 flac.

If only my parents didn't throw away about 100+ pieces of vinyl long time ago... If only I learn to appreciate good music since I was 5... but no! I started at 13!

Ha ha. There's a really good vinyl store near my school, but it's just too much of a hassle for me to get a turntable and vinyl. Maybe if I can find a decent turntable for a good price.

Oh... A turntable!!! My dad gift it to someone I heard... My dad just told me that he was actually an audio entuastic before I was born and before he start a business himself..  He's too busy right now... So he's now using some 2.1 speaker in his office...

It's completely subjective on what "good" sounds like and what vinyl you're talking about.  24 bit audio files have zero advantage as far as playback goes for humans listening, Vinyls sound worse and worse the more you play them and the record player you have makes a massive impact on the sound (I'd rather buy a nice little dac with zero moving parts)  I would rather have a lossless digital file over a vinyl any day but I don't think I've ever done critical listening with vinyls before.

No no no, now we can listen to Brittney Spears in HD!

Of course 24 bit audio makes things better, 24 > 16 is it not?

And of course vinyl is automatically better. It's in an analog format, which is what DACs do. Why have an extra step when it's already there? rolleyes.gif

I'm taking this purely from my ears, in saying that 24/192 sounds better to me.

I wanna hear 32 bit files.... 24 is max for my AK100 and UHA-6S.MKII to handle

Take that 24/192 file, down-sample it to 16/44 and I don't think you'll say the same.

HD tracks are often different masters of songs, so the differences in sound quality are probably due to that instead of 24-bit, 192 kHz sample rates.

Well, I think it's worth getting the HQ file even just for the sake of a better mastered version. I didn't know about this before becoming an audiophile, but recording quality does matter!

I'm using HDTracks for this debate.

Pshhh forget about trying to abx the difference between 16 and 24 bit files (320kbps and 16/44.1 is hard enough)

Very very well written explanation:
