Modded AKG 701's - Page 2

Drew does some sweet work. I like the look of the version you have rather than the single entry style. Very clean looking. Would love to hear a BD recabled headphone.

oh lol

I would agree with you that the 701's are better as an all a rounder and is forgiving with all types of amps, sources. The K1000’s are ruthlessly revealing.

Which AT did you like?

This does relate to the topic becuase you are talking about a $260-300 can that competes with the best in it's price range. What I like most about the K701 is its performance/price. The cable kills that, but maybe in a worth it way!?!?

On Arnold's the connection at the headphone is sealed. On the 'normal' Black Dragon equipped 701, second pic, the cable goes into the headphone unsealed and as far as I can tell not braced. Meaning a good tug on Arnold's pair is harmless while the default ones the cable could very well come right off.

My other pet peeve about Drew's cables is the Dragon logo shrink wrap. The piece under it is cut perfect, glued and shrunk air tight... but the logo wrap is almost always cut ragged, not to length and just cheap looking. I know he does both of them so why is one perfect like the rest of the cable and one quick and dirty? And why two to begin with, Cardas uses one wrap and its just as sturdy as when I bought it. Ya I'm done, good vent session back to myself

Do look damn sweet though

Maybe some lessons have been leared from early jobs to what you can get done now.

Frankly, I'm a long ways from being convinced to even do this sort of thing, since I'm well pleased with how the 701's sound already, and I figure that there are other, more meaningful upgrades people can do, before they start throwing upwards of $200 on 9-10 feet worth of some headphone cable.

I told you I was very skeptical.

For most yes. But for some of us we have $2000+ in our amps and another $3000+ in our source so $200 for a cable is far less costly and frankly more of a jump than going sideways to another $2000 amp

Got a point.

I've found the K701's to be a little "thicker" than realistic, and lacking the lively realism of the K501. With the laws of physics in place in a live performance, all acoustic music rolls off in the bass. Even huge pipe organs do - they're designed to. All instruments grow in power and gain fundamental as the pitch ascends due to the relative scale of the instrument body, string thickness, etc. To me, the stock K701's try too hard to bloom the midbass in an unnatural way - not quite as much as the HD650, and in a little different range. Soooo - I found that an easy mod to the K701's was to swap pads with the K501. The 701's "thin out" just a bit in a natural way, and come alive in the upper mids just a bit, to me at least.
Really...I love the 501's as well...I just posted a WTB for a pair. I had them before and loved the natural, open sound...but couldn't deal with the lack of bass...well...I don't know if bass is the right word...they were a little too thin sounding. But I'd love the 701's to sound a little more like the 501's in the open, transparent sense.

Point well made...$200 on a cable, for an all around better performer is a small price to pay...

...bass is tight and deep...

As a K701 owner...there doesn't seem to be a wide range of reactions yet, which leads to accusations of "placebo." (Wrong word, but I get the idea.) In any case, I'm confused about the effect different cables are supposed to have over sound.

Yeah, but is that really the case, or it just placebo effect?

My money is on the latter, however the only real way to tell would be a DBT.

I really need to try AT's one day. I've yet to hear them.

To me they were the Audiophile yet still bass head, cans. They punched you in the head, but with female vocals they would still give you a chill up your spine.

I wish there was an easy way I could find out and not be permanently down $200 or so for the experiment.

I'd just honestly be interested to see if I personally could hear any differences for myself. Fun experiment.
