Infinity 8 " subwoofer?

So I am thinking about subwoofer shopping and there are many many choices to consider. Does anyone know about the Infinity 8 subwoofer? I am looking for a musical subwoofer but it also has to be scary too. I want to be frightened by a powerful subwoofer as well as it being tight and musical in the lower notes.

The Infinity 8 seems to be a good price for a high end subwoofer. Do you recommend it and will it blend easy with any good book shelf system?

Ok...the sub youre looking at is only $199,and its 100watts and 8".

No way is that going to be musical, tight,or frighten or scare you.
I suggest you pay $1200 though SVS if you want to get close to being "scared".
Actually any SVS would impress you ,if you felt that Infinity will impress you.
Also there are no "high-end" subwoofers for $199.

Try:
SVS
HSU
Velodyne
Rel
Paradigm
Difinitive
Mirage

They all make Subs.

Also, another thing.....by the time you get your subwoofers bass up to the "scary" level......you will nolonger hear your tiny bookshelf speakers, because they wont keep up.
I suggest if youre so into "scary",to get some good towers that already have decent bass, and augment those with a big sub.
Also read posts here on hearing damage.

I am afraid that any speaker from a bookshelf system will hardly be a good match for any aftermarket subwoofer. Those bookshelf system speakers won't reach low enough to match well with a sub. In fact, there are some legitimate hifi speakers, such as the well-regraded NHT SuperZero, that can't do the job unless very careful matching is involved.

I haven't heard the Infinity sub, but it looks to be from the Primus line. This particular line is very well-received and I don't think the sub would be any worse. However, one thing to keep in mind is that a good sub for music will not necessarily make it good for HT. For example, SVS subs are good for HT but not-so-good for music. Mirage subs, on the other hand, are great subs for both music and HT....they just won't give that ultimate slam like the SVS. Do a search here for the Mirage Nanosub, which is a very economical sub that gives excellent performance.

REL subs? Those are well beyond $200.00.....

The Infinity sub listed is pretty tight and clean for a sub in that price range. Low end FR is limited though. It was made more for filling out the mid/low bass on the Primus bookshelf speakers (which have no mid/low bass) than for HT purposes.

Now I'm thinking about Polk PSW12. Maybe that will be a great addition.

but I'll keep those subs that you all mentioned in mind too. Thanks

There are too many things to consider that you havent mentioned, such as the size and shape of the room, whats in the room, the rest of your gear etc.

If you have a small room like mine, an 8 inch sub would be good enough (my room is 11 x 11 feet). If you have a larger room, then you will most likely want a larger sub.

Now the fact that you mentioned scary in the same sentence as tight and musical, means that you may need to dish out some good cash.

For me and my present room I have a Mirage NanoSub that is tight and musical and blends well with my Monitor Audio Speakers. My main goal was not to cause shortness of breath, but to sound musical and fill out the bottom end of my speakers, and it does this job admirably.

It's a small room like an average bedroom. Maybe an 8-10 inch sub will do. I was thinking 12 inch but it's probably too much. I will consider the Mirage.

I wouldn't go with the Polk PSW12. I had the PSW404 with my Polk RTi HT setup, and it was severely disappointing. It could pump out enough bass for HT work and had decent extension for that size of box, but the bass was slow and flabby and particularly unsuited for music. The Parts Express Titanic subs are a much better value in the $300-400 range.

I agree, the Polk's low end subs are no good. I had some extensive listening time with their 10" and it was extremely 'un-musical'. That said, I actually own the Infinity PS-8. I bought it because it was one of the only 8" subs I could find and I needed something small for my bedroom (and it wasn't too expensive).

It's dedicated to music only, paired with a set of MB Quart bookshelves (which are awesome, but good luck finding any info on them). I have the crossover set at something like 80hz and the volume at about 3/4. It really isn't bad. My bookshelves extend pretty low though. I'm not sure how well the sub would pair with a smaller speaker.

Since I bought the sub though, I had a chance to hear the Mirage 8". If I could do it all over again (and had the extra dough) I probably would have gone for that. It seems to be tighter at higher frequencies than my Infinity.

Good Luck

Maybe I'll get a good musical sub like the Mirage for music and another sub that's cheap just for movies.

So now I am seriously thinking about the MirageOmni S8 100-Watt Powered 8-Inch subwoofer. The Mirage Nano sub sounds good but I cannot find it anywhere. It is available at Amazon but the Nano is refurbished and I am nervous about buying refurbished.

Here's my candidate

yeah, that's the 8" mirage I've listened to at the local hifi shop. it's darn good for an eight inch sub (granted the speakers at the hifi shop are larger than what I have paired with the Infinity).

edit: and it looks to be the same price as well (that I paid at CC, darn it all). I would recommend it over the Infinity. don't even consider the polk psw10.

IMHO, if you're going to go with two subs and one's already >$200, might as well go with a better one to do both. There's a Hsu STF-2 on agon for $330 shipped. There's also the Dayton Titanic MKIII 10" for $360 shipped. Both are excellent dual purpose subs.

That sounds like a really good deal but do you think it would be too loud for a small room? Maybe the HSU STF 1 would be more ideal for a small room?...and a better match for my bookshelf speakers?

Edit: I've read a couple reviews for the HSU-STF 1 and they indicate that it is alright for small rooms and does perform well for DVD and music. So this might be the subwoofer for me that's scary, yet musical.

2nd Edit: I was reading reviews for the HSU-STF 2, and people said that it was fine for small rooms. I am now considering the HSU STF 2 instead of STF 1 because low extenion goes down even further to 25 hz. This lower extention seems very attractive.
